Ybor Chamber
Member Spotlight
One of Ybor's own has been named one of the "10 who make Tampa Bay area's economic outlook brighter" by columnist Robert Trigaux of the St. Petersburg Times. Jason Woody, President and CEO of the Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research, has that honor.
The Lions Eye Institute provides eye transplant tissue and corneas for most of the surgeons in Florida. Located in the renovated Lazano & Sons Cigar Factory on 21st Street, the Lions Eye Institute is the first ever eye bank and ocular research center in the world.
Not only a world-renowned eye bank and research facility, but the Lions Eye Institute also has The Foundation, a nonprofit organization which works to raise funds to support sight-related outreach, education, treatment and research. The Foundation was established on the belief that "everyone deserves the gift of sight." This belief is realized everyday by the donation of over $1 million of their services annually and roughly $1 million in eye tissue to those who would not otherwise be able to afford their corneal transplant surgery.
"The Institute partners with out-of-state researchers from such renowned institutions as Emery University, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Southern California, bringing their researchers to Ybor City," says President & CEO, Jason Woody.
We should all be proud to have this world-class research institute right in our backyard.

Ybor Celebrates Both Old and New The Chamber's La Setima E-newsletter is one year old with this issue. The electronic version has allowed us to publish more frequency (bi-weekly vs. monthly). This not only gives our members more up-to-date coverage, but the new format also provides more space. Staff has been able to include significantly more items in our "events list" and add a "member spotlight" to each issue. I would like to thank Tom Favata and Michele Keating for their contributions to La Setima over the past year and our Chairs, as well. We have had many compliments on how this new format keeps you up-to-date on both Chamber and District activities. Sunday's Tampa Tribune "Business Section" pronounced Ybor's own Savtira Corp. "Winner of the Week." Savtira announced this week that they will be adding 265 high-paying jobs to Tampa's workforce. You can learn more about this cloud-based start-up from its founder and CEO Tim Roberts, who will be the guest speaker at our Membership Luncheon - Tuesday, September 13th at 11:45 at the Columbia. Our next Luncheon is sponsored by Innovaro, another of Ybor City's new-age companies. "Save the Date" - for our 46th Annual Chamber Gala Saturday, September 17th beginning at 6:30 PM at the Columbia. We will be presenting the Adela and Cesar Gonzmart Award to the More' Family, owners and operators of La Segunda Central Bakery for almost a century. La Segunda Central, known for its iconic Cuban bread and its original guava pasteles, will celebrate its centennial in 2015. The Chamber's Gala represents not only the opening of the Hispanic social season, but also helps maintain the cohesiveness and intimacy of the Ybor community. If you missed the Ybor OktoberFest Pub Crawl last year - it was a blast. For a first-time event, it was very successful! This year, the Committee plans to add a few more of Ybor's pubs and patio bars to the "crawl." The Second Annual Ybor OktoberFest Pub Crawl will be held on Saturday, October 1st from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. The BierGarten was a major component of celebrations in Ybor City's immigrant community. And, Ybor's German lithographers were some of the first "techies" in Tampa - they printed all the sophisticated, embossing and gold leaf cigar and cigar box labels. - Tom Keating
