Message from the Chair

Greetings fellow members,

I can't believe it is already August - July has been so busy. Our summer edition of the Ybor Expo: Business Showcase was a great success. New members had a chance to "show their stuff" from Bay Area business news-leader - Tampa Bay Business Journal to Event Show Production's - eye-catching, "Vegas show-girl." If you haven't been to one of our bi-annual "table-top, trade shows" you need to experience one first-hand.

We held our annual Mini-Retreat at the Corporate Headquarter of GTE Federal Credit Union at the western end of the District. Not only was it highly productive, but also an opportunity for Board members to get to know each other better. The agenda "covered the waterfront" with reports from administration, marketing, events and membership. Highlights included progress reports on: our website update, special events and increasing membership. I would like to thank my Vice Chairs, Officers and Directors for a job well done and our gracious hosts at GTE/FCU for their hospitality - the view and the food were both excellent.

Tom, our CEO, tells me that each new Chair of the Board contributes something unique to the Chamber. My specialty is public relations, so I'm pleased to say we are making a serious effort at promoting ourselves more effectively. We have added a section on "Chamber Events" in the new edition of our Map & Guide (to be released soon). And, we will be promoting our next featured event across multiple platforms, which will include the website, La Setima and our valued Media Sponsors.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our colleagues at the Ybor City Round Table on their successful effort in securing a two million dollar earmark from the Hillsborough County Commission for the preservation of Ybor City's Historic Social Clubs. In addition, I want to thank our Commissioners and encourage the Round Table to make sure that all of Ybor City's "mutual-aid societies" benefit from this largess.

Until next month- Andrea White
