Tom Keating Head Shot

Hot, Hot, Hot!

This week our casita-office looked like a scene from a bad science fiction movie.  You know the one where there's been a solar flare and everyone has their fan going full-speed just prior to the power grid shutting-down.  It's definitely time for a cold one or two or even three.  And that, my friends, is something we have in abundance in Ybor.

My advice as a seasoned, Florida native is to stay in the shade, locate a cool breeze and don appropriate clothing (guayabera).  I just had one of my professional colleagues (Managing Partner of one of the District's PR firms) come-into my office in extra-casual Friday dress (shorts, t-shirt and flip flops).  He reminded me that this is National Flip-Flop Day.  Tampa business men and women, it is time to shed your dark suites and your panty hose.  Be proud of your tropical heritage and go green!

Folks in Ybor City are pretty darn smart.  After "festival season" we go inside and enjoy the air conditioning and honor our "best & brightest."  The Round Table, Church of Scientology, Rotary Club and Museum Society have all had wonderful banquets over the last month.  If there's one thing we know how to do in Ybor City - it's celebrate excellence.  Whether it's in the A/C or on the street - we do it better.  Come celebrate life in Ybor City.

Ybor Chamber Member Spotlight

Academy Prep of Tampa is one of the city's best-kept secrets, and it is located right here in Ybor City. Opened in 2003 and located in the refurbished historic V.M. Grammer School, Academy Prep serves inner-city kids. All 18 students from Academy Prep's inaugural class graduated from high school this year, with most planning on attending college in the fall.

Lead by educator Lincoln Tamayo, Academy Prep lives its Vision - "To be the premier Tampa urban middle school which prepares hundreds of economically disadvantaged students to achieve academic success and become community leaders."

Academy Prep serves 5th - 8th grade students, who must agree, along with their families, to adhere to a rigorous schedule - attend school up to 11 hours a day, six days a week; receive a full range of academics; participate each day in afternoon enrichment programs; take part in required Saturday field trips, community service activities, and an 11th month program in June.

One example of their extra curricular achievements - the K-8 Chess Team successfully defended their regional championship title for the fifth straight year (2007 - 2011).

A visit several years ago to Academy Prep, left us wishing our own kids could have received a middle school education as vigorous and challenging as Academy Prep students receive.
