Nominations for 18th Gonzmart Award Being Accepted

Nominations for Ybor City's most prestigious recognition, the Adela & Cesar Gonzmart Award, are being sought by the Ybor City Chamber of Commerce.  The Gonzmart Award has been presented annually for the past 17 years at the Chamber's formal Gala.  This year's Gala will be held at the Columbia Restaurant on Saturday, September 17th - please save the date!

Chair Sandra Fernandez-Lopez, Co-Chair Elliot Wheeler and the Chamber's Gala Committee are starting early this year to provide plenty of time to seek nominations, select the winner, announce the award and promote Gala to the entire Ybor community.  The 46th Annual Chamber Gala marks the traditional opening of the "Latin social season."  Chamber members will be receiving their nomination forms by e-mail.

Ybor Chamber Member Spotlight

There is a gem of a restaurant located in the heart of Ybor City, The Stone Soup Company. Proprietor and chef, Ilya Goldberg's focus is on fresh, healthy foods. He accomplishes this by air-cooking, using local produce and offering veggie based soups and sorbet gelatos.

This bistro-style eatery is open 7 days a week and offers not only delicious, homemade soups, fresh sandwiches, salads and entrees such as Seafood Pasta and Mojo Roasted Cardo, but also beer, wine and Sangria. You can enjoy happy hour from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm daily, along with an extended dinner menu. The Stone Soup also provides catering.

As if providing great food at a good price in a friendly atmosphere wasn't enough, Ilya also gives back to the community. All unused produce is made into vegetable soup and donated to local homeless shelters for redistribution. Ilya would like other local restaurants to join him in the "2" Campaign - for every cup of soup sold in the restaurant, a cup of soup is donated at the end of the week.

Their motto says it all about The Stone Soup Company and their commitment to their customers and the community - "MO soup for you!"

Andrea White headshotChair's Message

Greetings fellow members -

I want to thank my friend, the Honorable Bob Buckhorn, for being our Installing Officer.  It was wonderful to have such a strong turn-out for the Annual Installation Luncheon.  I especially appreciate all my friends and colleagues from Bright House Networks for attending.  Staff informed me that we had 141 guests at this year's ceremony - a new record.

As Past Chair Arturo Fuente, Jr. pointed out, we have had a very productive year with a strong events schedule, an increase in both regular and tiered membership and the "refresh" of our logo by the Marketing Committee.  We have been blessed with a solid leadership team; most of whom will be continuing on with me.  The Ybor City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is truly a talented and dedicated group.

I am very excited about the coming year.  We will be creating a new "state of the art" website, revitalizing the community's major fall event, Guavaween, and continuing to fine-tune our array of events that promote the District.  We are also fortunate to have an experienced and highly-professional staff, who continue to devote themselves to the preservation and promotion of Tampa's National Historic Landmark District.

Ybor City is the "heart and soul" of Tampa.  As a long-time resident of this area, I have seen many positive changes in the last few years.  In my term as Chair of the Ybor City Chamber, I hope to see Ybor City become a "must see destination," not only for local visitors and domestic tourists, but also for international guests.

Until next month- Andrea White
