Don Tomas declares,
"There'll be dancing in the streets!"
La Setima was fortunate to get this exclusive interview with Don Tomas, the new Alcalde de Ybor, just off of official duties in last weekend's Knight Parade.
La Setima: Don Tomas, you appeared to come out of nowhere to win the race for Alcalde. How did you become the honorary mayor of Ybor City?
Don Tomas: I got a call from David Greco before the holidays, who thought since I wasn't doing anything else I might be available. After that, it was a series of grueling personal and group interviews with the commanders of the Ybor army, navy and air force.
La Setima: Did you do extensive research before throwing your hat in the ring?
Don Tomas: Why, yes. I googled "Alcade de Ybor" on the internet and found a whole bunch of guys that had listed it in their obituaries. I thought - how cool is that!
La Setima: Did you always have aspirations for high public office?
Don Tomas: When I was a kid I liked board games especially Monopoly, so I guess you could say that I was destined for greatness.
La Setima: What are the qualifications for this esteemed position?
Don Tomas: It helps if you are older and Latin, but it is most important to look good in a top hat and tails.
La Setima: Some people say that you look like a very famous person. Do you care to comment on that?
Don Tomas: Yes, some people think I bare a striking resemblance to Santa Claus. I ask them, where do you think Santa lives when he's not working? Ybor City! Ho Ho Ho
La Setima: Who do you see winning the upcoming mayor's race in Tampa?
Don Tomas: People ask me that all the time - the one that gets the most votes!
La Setima: Any final thoughts?
Don Tomas: I want to invite all of our friends in the Bay Area to the 64th Annual Fiesta Day here in Ybor City - Saturday, February 26th on 7th Avenue - there'll be dancing in the streets!
