(Tampa, FL) The Ybor City Chamber of Commerce is preparing to host its 64th Annual Fiesta Day, held on the last Saturday in February from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. This traditional event harkens back to the "verbena" or mass-picnic held by Ybor's cigar workers as a day of rest. Each group of Cuban, Spanish, Italian, German and Romanian immigrants provided a component of this eclectic, cultural celebration.
The Ybor City Chamber has focused on four key elements to return greater authenticity to this free, family-oriented street festival: Ybor cuisine, local art, Latin music and full-participation of our unique cultural institutions.
We have engaged Ybor's own restaurants in our Sabor de Ybor. Examples of "gourmet street food" will include: Bernini's Italian steak sandwiches; Carmine's deviled crabs and the Columbia's Spanish paella. You will be able to graze from one end of La Setima (7th Avenue) to the other.
Arte de Ybor will include not only our own "creative retail" such at Wear Me Out's custom-designed purses and Singing Stone's contemporary "art as jewelry," but also craftsmen from around the Bay Area and a juried-art show for up and coming, fine artists will be held in the spacious new facilities of the Relevant Church, one of Ybor's dynamic "urban churches."
Get ready to dance in the streets! Top Bay Area Latin Bands will be playing on the Maxima 92.5 Main Stage. Javier - Sambas Flamencas, Danny Lozada's salsa sounds and Supernatural, a nationally-booked Santana tribute band, will bring out "the Latino" in everyone. The Ybor Chamber takes great pride in featuring local arts magnet-schools and the HCC Jazz Ensemble on the Centro Ybor Youth Stage.
Last, but by no means least, is the participation of Ybor City's unique social clubs: the Cuban Club, Centro Asturiano, Marti-Maceo, the Italian Club and the Ybor City Museum and State Park. In addition, we welcome the participation of our colleague destinations in the Tampa's vibrant tourism industry, such as Lowery Park Zoo and Busch Gardens.
Fiesta Day 2011 is presented by BB&T Bank and sponsored by Verizon, Maxima 92.5, Centro Ybor, the St. Petersburg Times, City of Tampa and Ybor City Development Corporation. For more information contact www.ybor.org or call 813.241-8838.
