Guavaween 25:
Bacchanalia at Its Best Sensuous, seductive, sexy and only a bit scary, Ybor City's
Guavaween is where you and your friends are the most important part of the
party. Where can you enjoy a beer in
the street legally; feast on the best Latin, Italian and Greek cuisine; see
some of the most creative costumes imaginable and dance in the street till 3:00
AM? - in our National Historic Landmark
District - Ybor City! Human beings have been celebrating the autumnal equinox,
since the beginning of time. We have
worked hard; the harvest is in and we feel the need for a blow-out. Sure the days are getting shorter and
darkness longer, but hey, hope springs eternal. Our ancestors knew how to party. I'm rather certain there are some Druids in my background; probably a
couple of Vikings and maybe even a Spaniard, if what they say about the "black
Irish" is true. Come celebrate your hard work, the refreshing cool of
Florida's fall and take part in the 25th Anniversary of Guavaween -
Tampa's "Halloween with a Latin flair." While Mama and Papa Guava are no more real than Jose Gaspar, you can
have your own krewe for the cost of admission; and march in the Stumble with
whatever group of friends and colleagues you put together. What I like is that this is the best deal in Central Florida -
the Orlando theme park will cost somewhere near $60 and North Tampa's theme
park in the neighborhood of $40. While our "day of" gate is $17, if you can find Feature's
Costumes in South Tampa you can buy advance tickets for only $12 (by my
calculation that is only one dollar an hour). Come down to the District early and have dinner or do like we do at the
Chamber. Establish a base-camp at one
of our many quaint pubs, patio bars or fine restaurants and have a pre-game
party. We have venues in your Historic
District than can host from four to four hundred. Do your part to keep Guavaween in the "top-13 Halloween
events in the country!" - Tom Keating

Ybor Chamber Member Spotlight
El Sol Cigars has been a presence in Ybor City since 1929,
when master cigar makers Guy and Mary Saitta, opened their cigar shop on 7th
Avenue. The tradition was carried on by their son Tony and now grandson Bob.
All of El Sol Cigars are hand rolled in small cigar factories in Tampa,
Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. You can purchase cigars on-line
at www.elsolcigars.com or from Bob
himself at his 7th Avenue store. Bob has been a loyal member of the
Ybor City Chamber since 1997 and is proud of the heritage given to him by his
grandparents.
As Guy Saitta once said:
"Cigars are not vitamins, they're enjoyment. But the pleasure that a
cigar offers goes beyond the smoking...Tobacco has a kind of romance...I'm never
alone when I have a cigar going. I don't just taste tobacco, I don't just see a
cigar. I can see, taste, smell and feel the earth, the sunshine, the rain and
the air trapped in every leaf."
Now that is a love affair with the cigar.
