Once again, LO QUE A
PASADO (WHAT'S HAPPENED LATELY) in YBOR CITY? Well, this past month has been a little quiet, but here are a few of the

depicts Ybor City's Latin heritage was featured. They are located at 1226 Seventh

neighborhood concerns, IKEA representatives have postponed a request to
add a 125 foot high sign to the company's store in the Ybor City area.
patrons eat like it's 1905 (Tampa Tribune 9/20/2010)
Restaurant's annual 1905 Day celebration, which features popular menu
items at rock-bottom prices. This
event has been very popular for years and attracts large crowds.
At our luncheon this month we had the pleasure of hearing an
update on the Encore project from Roxanne Amoroso, Senior VP of Bank of
America. The Encore is a 30-acre urban
redevelopment plan for the property located between downtown Tampa and Ybor
City, formerly known as Central Park Village. Phase one of the project is underway and Roxanne gave an excellent
update on their progress as well as expanding on the private sector
perspective. Encore includes plans for
a hotel, grocery store, retail stores and mixed income housing. This is a major project which will have a positive
impact to our businesses and properties in Ybor City.
Our Chamber's 45th Annual Gala and the 17th
presentation of the Gonzmart award was held on September 17th. On behalf of our family, we are deeply
honored to receive the Adela and Cesar Gonzmart award. I would like to thank the entire Gala committee
and staff for all their hard work, dedication and commitment in putting on this
wonderful event. Everyone had a very
enjoyable evening. And a special thanks
goes to our chair, Sandra Fernandez-Lopez and our co-chair Elliott Wheeler for
their leadership in making the evening a very special and memorable one!
And finally, Guavaween is just a few weeks away. Can you believe it? I can't wait until all the festivities begin. This year we are celebrating our 25th
anniversary and it will be held on Saturday, October 30th. So if you have not gotten your costume yet,
what are you waiting for? Let's DO IT!!! Join
the big guava party with plenty of entertainment and folks dressed in all sorts
of creative and fun costumes! Bring the
kids & family down during the day for Family Fun Fest and then the big bash
continues with the Mama Guava Stumble parade hitting the streets in the
evening. So get your friends &
groups together and we will see you all there! For more information please contact CC Events at 813.242.4828 or visit www.cc-events.org/gw/ .
Hasta la proxima (until next time)!

It was exciting to see three generations of Ybor's Fuente family all in one place at one time. Throughout the world the name Fuente is synonymous with fine cigars. In Tampa, it is also synonymous with the best in "civic engagement." Photo by Joe Photo
