Practical Parent Education News
New Training is coming!
The Next Step, an innovative, one-day followup training for PPE parent educators will be announced in November. Watch the PPE website for information about this exciting new training opportunity!
Annual Award Nominations
Every year at the Practical Parent Education Annual Conference, PPE recognizes a stellar parenting program and an outstanding parent educator.
The Making a Difference for Families Award is designed to recognize Practical Parent Education programs that have initiated unique parenting-related services that are truly having a positive impact on families. The service must involve parents and incorporate PPE services and/or curriculum at some level. The winning program will have the opportunity to expand their program by receiving a free subscription package, including all materials and training for one parent educator, a $1000 value! The Linda Johnston Parent Educator of the Year Award recognizes the work of a parent educator who goes that extra mile to provide outstanding services to the community he or she serves. These services must directly involve parents and must incorporate PPE Services and/or curriculum at some level. Parent Educators are welcome to nominate themselves. This outstanding parent educator will receive a lifetime subscription to PPE, eliminating the need to renew each year.

Helping Parents, Caregivers...and Legislators Do Better
by Jill Stamm, Ph.D.
Dr. Stamm will be a keynote speaker at the Practical Parent Education Conference November 1
"I did what I knew. And when I knew better...I did better."
-Maya Angelou
In a recent publication highlighting my work in Arizona, this powerful Maya Angelou quote appeared and was followed by the statement that, "Most parents do the best very they can. They remember how they were raised, they use the techniques their parents used, they 'do the best they can with what they know.' Now, thanks to science and brain imaging that allow us to look into children's brains, we know better. New Directions Institute for Infant Brain Development (NDI) is devoted to using that information to help parents do better." The belief that most parents do the very best they can to help their children grow and develop has been at the heart of the work I have been so passionately involved with for the past 15 years. New Directions is a nonprofit organization that I co-founded in order to share with parents and care providers some of the 'lessons learned' by neuroscientists that have shown both the opportunities and vulnerabilities of the earliest years in a child's life. What is being learned is important because we can finally begin to isolate some of the factors that seem to matter most to the development of a strong and healthy brain.
