Chamber CEO Jim Hizer announces campaign total
|
"Tipping point for Pensacola"
That's what campaign co-chair and Gulf Power Vice President Bentina Terry said about the campaign's success. She also said that Pensacola is "on the precipice of something truly great" thanks to the over $7.3 million pledged to the Vision 2015 program. Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward III is equally optimistic about the Chamber's program, saying "this is our time in this next decade to do great things." The campaign's success can be attributed to new CEO Jim Hizer, whose message of more aggressive, strategic, and coordinated economic development efforts resonated with business leaders who are ready for new approaches to growth and prosperity. Many business leaders who had not previously been big Chamber supporters were persuaded that Vision 2015 was the right approach, at the right time, and made significant commitments to the campaign. One of them was professional golfer Jerry Pate, who owns a local turf & irrigation business. In addition to a six figure pledge, Pate has volunteered to join local political and private-sector leaders on business recruitment trips. Read the Pensacola News Journal's coverage of the campaign victory celebration, and an Op-Ed by Gulf Power's Bentina Terry about the importance of the Vision 2015 program to the Pensacola region.

Maury Alliance President Brandom Gengelbach
|
"We're going to be the change agent"
A community of 85,000 people, Maury County TN now has $2.8 million to execute its new four-year plan, designed to produce 2,000 jobs and $140 million in capital investment. The Maury Alliance's President, Brandom Gengelbach understands that the 150 investors expect a return on their investment in his organization, but he's not looking to lower those expectations. At an event in January to celebrate the campaign's over-goal conclusion, Gengelbach told business and community leaders that, "We have the resources, and now there are no more excuses. We will be held accountable for getting this done." Due in part to the closing of GM's nearby Saturn plant, Maury County's unemployment rate is among the highest in Tennessee. But business leaders and elected officials are committed to turning things around and have demonstrated confidence in the Alliance and its four year plan. As Maury Regional Medical Center CEO and campaign co-chair Robert Otwell said at the January event, "We're not happy with our situation. We're going to change our situation and be the change agent for the future of Maury County and southern Middle Tennessee." Local businesses committed 60% of the $2.8 million raised, with City and County governments providing the other 40%. Read more about the campaign and the plan.
