HBP SUCCESS STORY: Abandoned Teen Parent Grateful for HBP "Village"
| TPEP graduate Nia is 19 years old and mother to Tyrone, 15 months old.
I lived in Miami, FL with my aunt. My high school graduation was one of my greatest accomplishments. Just 160 students in my class of 400 received a diploma, so I feel I beat the odds.
Nonetheless, I was 3 months' pregnant when I walked across the stage and accepted my diploma. When my aunt discovered my pregnancy, she immediately kicked me out of her house, her life, and worst of all, her heart. I wasn't sure what would h

| appen to me and my child. The baby's father and his parents allowed me to live with them for a time.
Then a caring aunt on my father's side of the family who lives in Washington, D.C. invited me to move in with her.
This was an opportunity of hope and I gladly accepted. I arrived in D.C. with absolutely nothing but my desire to change my life and to provide a safe, happy and healthy life for my unborn child.

Parent Empowerment Program.
More than 200 participants enjoyed a cookout, music, and fun as 100+ cars and motorcycles were washed, yielding more than $1,000 in gifts to HBP.
"We really appreciate the support," said HBP Executive Director Regine Elie. "This was our most enthusiastic, best-attended event ever." Join us in thanking these local bike clubs for their generosity, enthusiasm, and support!

March 2012 TPEP Update: Confident Parenting Wrap Up
|
During March, TPEP participants completed the final module of Confident Parenting as they learned effective parenting strategies equipping them to respect and honor their unique history and traditions of people of African descent.
This month's Confident Parenting session topics included:
- Methods of discipline
- Single parenting
- Building a relationship
- Racism
TPEP participants also celebrated Women's History Month during March with guest speaker, Dr. Crystal Kuykendall (educator and attorney), who shared inspiring stories and led a discussion about women throughout history including Harriet Tubman, Michelle Obama, Mary Mc Cleod Bethune, Dorothy Height, Venus & Serena Williams, Cicely Tyson, Oprah Winfrey and Tyra Banks.
