HBP SUCCESS STORY: Domestic Violence Victim Overcomes Odds, Keeps Dream Alive
| Sharise suffered from postpartum depression and domestic violence, but home visitation from her HBP case manager helped her beat the odds and turn her life around. Here is her story.
Sharise first started meeting with a HBP case manager when she was pregnant and living in a temporary shelter with her toddler daughter. "I want to go college," she told the case manager, who encouraged her to keep that dream alive. But in Sharise's mind, her situation appeared hopeless. She struggled with severe depression.
It spiraled downward even further after her son was born. By that point, she had moved into permanent housing. The stress of caring for two small children compounded further as Sharise faced a horrible domestic violence relationship with her son's father. He beat her in front of both children, at one point endangering the baby and leaving Sharise bleeding and in need of stitches as he ran away with their son.
But Sharise continued to receive HBP home visits, treatment, and support from her case manager for nearly a year. Finally, after much counsel and encouragement, Sharise realized she needed to make a better life for herself. (Read the rest of Sharise's story ...)

February 2012 TPEP Update: Confident Parenting
|
Throughout February, TPEP participants cultivated their child rearing skills in Confident Parenting classes, a skill-building program which honors the unique history and traditions of people of African descent in culturally-sensitive and culturally-affirming ways.
Confident Parenting is known as a proven program in helping to raise proud, confident and healthy African-American children. Ms. Ruth Rich, Director of Health Education & Outreach for Healthy Babies Project, led our Confident Parenting sessions, which included:
- Traditional vs. Modern Disciplining Methods
- Children's Developmental Abilities
- The Thinking Parent's Approach
Teen parents will wrap up Confident Parenting in March, complete TPEP's Module 3, and begin Module 4 (read full February 2012 TPEP Update ...)

A Season of Hope for HBP Teens: "Their Spring Is Here!"
| By Kahlil Kuykendall, TPEP Coordinator
It has been a privilege to walk with our TPEP parents and parents-to-be this spring. This season has taken on special meaning for our participants as they prepare for a new little person to walk into each of their lives.
During our recent TPEP group sessions, as we focused on Confident Parenting and celebrated Black History Month, TPEP members shared an inspiring discussion about cultural issues related to motherhood, fear of failure, hope, and renewal. Together, they talked about life's seasons and how these seasonal changes correlate to what we experience in our day-to-day lives.
TPEP-ers agreed that during this Spring Season of their lives they can collectively and individually find the courage to be great mothers, sisters and daughters even when they are scared. The group admittedly realized that perhaps some of their parents didn't have the right tools for parenting and were not quite ready during their "Spring Season." Irrespective of their parents and their many mistakes, our teens were assured that they are prepared with tools of knowledge and ready for the journey of motherhood. Their spring is here!
