Greetings!

Welcome to Way of Life Coaching, LLC e-Newsletter!

This month we explore motives for living and methods for sharing the gospel.  As we consider what causes us to elevate God or ourselves, "Food for Thought" hones in on a quiet, yet oftentimes quite debilitating, underlying concern that can short circuit our efforts at Christ-like living, weakening our testimony.  "Image Bearers" brings us back to Paul's message and challenges us to consider our own.

We pray that your time spent with us will encourage, motivate, and support your own personal efforts to draw closer to the One True Living God.

A reminder of the simple structure follows:

WOL Community - Quick Snips: Review of the Promised Land Living Curriculum for graduates, but applicable to anyone

CONTENDING vs. COOPERATING

We were all made to worship (give worth to/glorify) something. We're hardwired that way from our Sovereign Creator. Today we explore: What do we spend our time glorifying and what does that look like in our everyday life?

Promised Land Living alumni learned about glorifying self (contending) versus glorifying God (cooperating). Contending keeps us stuck in lies (in some manner, God is not enough) and cooperating shifts us into truth (God is more than enough). Check yourself on some of these tell tale symptoms:

Glorify Self:                Glorify God:

* Prideful                   * Humble

* "I'm so good!"          * Sacrifice of praise for God's goodness

* Complaining/whining  * Thankful

* Over self-indulgence * Subservient

* Serve flesh              * Obedient to truth

How do we move out of contentious living?

1. Meditate on God's word - Remember who He is and who you are in relation to Him. "And yet, O Lord, You are our Father.  We are the clay, and You are the potter.  We all are formed by Your hand." Isaiah 64:8

2. Identify lies and shift into truth - Awareness of lies that pollute our thought-life provide powerful opportunity to say "No! I choose to believe truth". We take captive those thoughts to the obedience of Christ. The statement "and the truth will set you free" is the very Word of God - His promise to you!  Will we take it lightly or hold it tightly? "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." John 8:31-32

3.Hang on!  Notice the "if" in the above Scripture: If you hold to the truth. We are in a battle that originates in the heavenlies but is very much felt in our own persons. With our corruptible flesh those "ifs" indicate a need for continuous action. Hallelujah that we are more than conquerors in Christ!  There is no temptation that we cannot overcome. No trial that we cannot endure. No test that need fail because of the power of Christ within (1 Peter and Ephesians really help us to see this). But - if we do, remember your consolation is also Christ who's finished work covers us. We can confess and move on - glorifying God even in our weakness through confession. He is powerful to save and merciful to forgive.

4. Consider your Christ-likeness: While we are not to compare ourselves to one another for the sake of building ourselves up or tearing down a brother, there is something we are asked to compare ourselves to - Christ Himself. Am I moving towards His likeness or away from it?

Have you every watched a fly fisherman? Cast out, reel in. Cast out, reel in. It's a continuous motion. We are cast out fly fishermanthere in this sinful world. This is not our home. We are aliens in a foreign land under constant assault by the deceiver; and so we continually "reel in" to God's truths. Let's help each other not let down our guard in this perverse and evil generation.

Coaching points (Try to allow yourself the opportunity to respond to one question before proceeding to the next):

How have you ascribed glory to God in the past week?

How do you want to ascribe glory to Him today?

How have you held to Truth in the past 24 hours?

Where is God calling you to greater obedience?

What do you want to change?

When will you make that change?

A STUDY OF 1 CORINTHIANS 15

Last month we looked at verses 1-8 and saw a lot of action.  Paul preached the gospel and the church received, believed and stood in the word. We saw that as a result of all this action, people are saved if they hold fast to the word and do not believe in vain.

Step 1: Pray that God would open your eyes to what He wants you to know and understand

Step 2:  Read 1 Corinthians 15:3-11

3For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; 7then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; 8and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also. 9For I am the least of the apostles, and not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me. 11Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

Step 3:  Answer questions based on the text

What did Paul deliver of first importance?
Break down what Paul preached, step by step. (verses 3-8)
How did Paul feel about himself in verse 9?

Step 4:  Ask these questions:

What is your testimony for Jesus? microphone

Are you willing to share you testimony?

What do you need to do to prepare like Paul, to give that testimony?

Step 5: Put it into action:

Paul preached and others came to believe.  We are asked to preach as well - in season and out.  2 Timothy 4:2 says "preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.

Do you consider yourself the least of a disciple?  There is good news:  Your own sin demonstrated your need for a Savior - glory be to God for that testimony!

Ø     To encourage your inner man, perhaps begin by simply meditating on and memorizing this passage from 2 Timothy.

Ø      Write your testimony as Paul did here.  Share it with a few people who know you.  Remove the words that don't connect to the true conversion you experienced in Christ.  Use this as a time to remove some of the "churchy" lingo that is weighing down even your own testimony! It is a chance to remember and return to your first love.  Hallelujah!

Ø     Pray God would give you the opportunity to share with others who need and are ready to hear.  Write to us and let us know what happened!

Food For Thought

VULNERABLE BUT PROTECTED

 dandelion

When we think of being vulnerable, it is a contradiction to think we can be protected. The words are opposites. The uncomfortable truth is that yes, we are vulnerable, but the bigger truth for the Believer is-we can be protected in our vulnerability.

We are creative in the ways we try to protect ourselves. Then one day the Holy Spirit holds up a mirror of truth to us and asks us to trust Him, to set aside our "protection." The amount of fear that creates is in direct proportion to our layers of self-defense. Perhaps the most fearful realization is what we see in the mirror: we already are vulnerable.

In that moment, He invites us into care. We can stay in the rags of our vulnerability or enter into His protection. The psalmist calls it the secret place

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty [Whose power no foe can withstand]. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, on Him I lean and rely, and in Him I (confidently) trust.  Psalm 91:1-2 Amp

And how do we enter the secret place? Look at verse 14. The Amplified Bible translators took the Hebrew and gave us an explanation of the meaning when there was no single word translation. In this verse the speaker is the Lord, and He says:

Because He has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he knows and understands My name. Here's what it means to understand His name, he [has a personal knowledge of My mercy, love and kindness; trusts and relies on Me; knowing I will never forsake him, no, never].

We are in the secret place when we love, trust, and rely on Him with personal confidence that because of who He is, He will never forsake us. It is an intimate one-on-one knowing that He holds us in His heart and we are welcome there.

Amazing protection and provision is ours when we dwell, when we live, in who God is. Grasping this is a life-long journey. Each truth we accept from Him in exchange for a lie we have believed is another step on the road.

Back to the beginning. True, we are so vulnerable that we cannot protect ourselves, but there is a bigger truth. God offers us His personal protection. It is ours if we accept it.
