Brainerd Lakes Chapter Newsletter

Greetings!

Welcome to this month's newsletter!

This month's meeting is Lure-making. For the past 2 years we have learned how to make double #10 style bucktails. We'll do it again this year! For about 1/2 the price you'll get the chance to select from a variety of skirt colors and blades to make your own "one of a kind" custom tail. Also, as soft plastics is gaining big ground in the muskie world we'll have a few tips on how to make your own plastics.

Our annual membership drive is taking place as well. Whether you are renewing or starting a new membership with Muskies Inc, now is the time! Draw a card from a select deck to see if you get $5 or $10 off your annual membership. There is a chance to get a free $35 membership too!

Hope to see you all there!

Youth Events to Bring the Kids!

There is 2 youth events that we are heavily involved with that are just around the corner.

Brainerd Parks and Rec Youth Fishing Clinic at Lum Park. Saturday, May 28th. Starts at 9am.

This event generally sees about 100-150 kids show up to participate in several fishing related stations including casting, fish cleaning, cold water and boat safety, knot tying, fishing contest and much more. Prizes, fun and food!

Lakeshore Conservation Club Youth Expo, Saturday, June 11th. Starts at 10am.

This event sees about the same amount of kids as the Parks and Rec event. This event gives the kids the opportunity to shoot shotguns, muzzleloaders and bows. Other stations include: fishing station with casting contest, wood duck house building, duck/goose calling and much more. Prizes, fun and food!

Lake Assessments on Woman and Cedar
The DNR Needs Volunteers!

Woman and Cedar lakes are currently in the process of during muskie assessments via netting. This is the PERFECT time to get your hands on a muskie before opener!

What is expected? Depending on which lake your helping out with... you will be meeting the DNR at the public access at 8am SHARP. Be a little early as they will leave the access at 8am. You need to bring with you gloves, waders/hip boots and a life jacket.

You will be assisting the DNR in pulling nets, removing fish from the nets and help measure, sex and tag muskies. It is a great experience! At the very least you'll get the education on what IS in the lake as far as size and population. Another advantage is the key stat of.... muskie location!

If you would like to help, and the DNR really needs the help this year, please check out the schedule of both lakes and contact Jeff with a date that you'd like to sign up for.

One thing that the Walker DNR is requesting is for you to fill out a "background" check form for Woman. A rule that was put in place for volunteers. The form MUST be filled out and faxed or emailed to the DNR. The form takes 2 business days to get on record. Please contact Jeff ASAP to get the form.

It's not muskies but it's still some pretty cool video of a TON of sturgeon. It's a live feed from Shawano, WI.

2011 Gil Hamm Challunge
This year's Gil Hamm Chapter Challunge is on Sabaskong Bay, Lake of the Woods. August 24 - 26. Wednesday - Friday.

A Gil Hamm website was created to keep people up to date with all the needed info. Check it out! www.gilhamm.com

The BLC is sending up at least 2 teams to the Hamm this year. If you are thinking of fishing it please let Jeff know to get on a team. Your accommodations are up to you.

Hugh Becker Grants to BLC
There have been a couple Hugh Becker Grants that the BLC has applied for to help out financially with programs that we have spearheaded or assisted.

First up is the Central Lakes College Scholarship Grant that we set up a few years ago. The last installment of grants have been submitted to the BLC. $8000 has been locked up by the BLC and Hugh Becker Foundation to submit to CLC for their Natural Resource program for returning students. We presented CLC with a check for the $8000 at our Banquet. The scheduled grants to students will be available for many years.

Acoustic Monitoring Project. $9846 has been approved to submit to the DNR for the program. The monitoring program will be held on Elk Lake by Itasca State Park. The monies are going to purchase monitors that will be attached to muskies and other fish for about 800 days to monitor the relationship between muskies and other species. The monitors will broadcast thier locations every 2-3 minutes so the DNR will be able to see how species relate to one another throughout the year.

BLC Fall Outing
For the past few years the BLC has done a Fall Outing trip to Cass Lake. The past couple years the attendance has fallen off a bit. Last year's Gil Hamm on Lake Vermilion was a huge hit not only for Chapter's around the country but for the BLC. Six teams attended. We have heard from many BLC'ers that they would like to go back. So... the option is on the table on having this year's Fall Outing on Lake Vermilion. The tenative time would be the end of September. As of right now Muskego Point Resort has offered a couple cabins for $46/person/night. That includes all taxes and charges. Vermilion Dam Lodge will be contacted soon to see what they would charge. The outing would only be for a long weekend. Tentatively we'll arrive Thursday afternoon and depart Sunday afternoon. The Outing will be set up like a "mini Hamm" with fun, food and prizes.

If you are interested in joining the Fall Outing please email Jeff asap so we can get a count or at least see how many people would be interested.
