Big Dawg Challunge on Mille Lacs

29 people hit Mille Lacs for the Big Dawg Challunge Tuesday evening August 3rd.

A few fish were seen by the crew with myself, Jeff Young, sinking the hooks in a nice 45.5"er to win the Challunge. My partner for the evening was my son Jay. Excuse me... I mean my "netman" son Jay! He did a great job. I did have a hand on the net handle too. Let's face it.. I was a little worried for a minute on how he'd handle it. Now for the picture taken. Uh oh.... dad has never taught the young one to take pictures! Jim Kath just happened to be close by and jumped in the boat and snapped a couple pics of Jay and I. Thanks Jim!

The action didn't stop there. Only about 1/2 hour later Jay has a follow come in. It's a HAWG! The newbie freaked and pulled the lure out of the water! Oh well. The thrill was watching his reaction! Eye's bulged, heavy breathing and knees knocking! Oh and did I mention the nonstop talk about the fish for the next 3 hours! A great time.

Gil Hamm Recap

Fishing was tough for a bunch of us. Some people didn't even see a fish all week while others couldn't stay out of them!

Star of the North Chapter repeated their performance and won the Challunge for the second year in a row. Congrats go out to them!

The BLC only managed one 44"er caught by Tim Turkowski during the Hamm hours. That one fish kept the BLC in 4th place behind Teams #2 and #1 of Star of the North and Bemidji which placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively.

There was some action before the Hamm though. Duck Johnson boated a 38", Jeff Isom a 50.25", Dusty Cartie and Jody Young both boated 28"-29" pretty ones. We call them "pretty ones" cause there too small to call them fish yet! Just kidding Dusty and Jody.

The Challunge website www.vermilionchallunge.com will be up until the end of October. It has been recently updated for the last time with a Hamm group picture and slideshow featuring 133 pictures.

MHOTY Round #4
Fall Showdown on the Trap!

Saturday, Sept 18
Big Mantrap Lake
Noon - 7:30pm

Not only is this our normal MOHTY outing it is also a Challenge between the BLC and Bemidji. We have yet to come up with the stakes but it'll be a good time between the two Chapters!

Also, like we've done in the past, some people will be camping overnight at the campground next to the landing. So it's an option for people if they'd like to do that too. I believe the sites were $12/night. First come first serve.

If you will not be able to attend the meeting afterward make sure you contact Jeff at 821-3669 to register your attendance to receive the attendance point in the Muskie Hunter of the Year standings.

Good Luck Everyone!
