Relay For Life

Relay for Life

My name is Alyson Tasker and I'm the Team Captain for the Dubuque Jaycees' 2011 Relay for Life team.  I'm proud to say it's the Dubuque Jaycees' 3rd year participating in Relay For Life, which will take place June 3-4, 2011.

Being on an American Cancer Society Relay For Life team is an amazing experience.  Picture the scene: you're surrounded by your family and friends, urging each other on to make another lap around the track. The air is filled with the sound of laughter and sometimes tears, as our community celebrates those who have fought cancer, remembers the loved ones we've lost, and fights back against a disease that has taken too much from too many.

It would be an honor to have you on our team for this year's Relay For Life. The American Cancer Society is saving lives by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back. Are you ready to join the fight?

Trap Shooting Event

Wednesday, June 22 at 6:30 PM

Come join the Jaycees at the Potosi Sportsman's Club in Potosi, WI on Wednesday, June 22nd for trap shooting.

We will be starting at 6:30 PM and will try to car pool from Dubuque.  If you would like to carpool to the event, please meet at the Diamond Jo parking ramp at 5:30 PM.

Never shot a gun before?  No problem, we will have instructors on hand that will provide both firearm safety and basic shooting fundamentals. They will also be available to help guide you through your rounds.

This is a fun and exciting event for both new and experienced shooters alike. You may bring your own shotgun if you wish; otherwise, guns will be provided. Each participant will fire 15 shots in rounds of five. You may bring your own shells if you like, but shells are included in your 15 shots (only 12 gauge shells are available). Prizes will be awarded for the best scores.

If time allows, extra shooting may be available if you desire.

Plan on a stop at the Potosi Brewery afterwards for a cold refreshment.

Cost to participate is $5.00 per person.  Please RSVP to Chad Wagener at cwagener@dubuquebank.com by May 31st.  Feel free to contact Chad by phone with any questions at 563-542-7237.

June Individual Development Event

Where: Park Farm Winery
Date / Time: Sunday, June 26 from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Cost: $10 per person for class. An additional $5 charge for Toast and Jam, which goes towards a glass or wine and/or bottle. A Park Farm wine glass will be included with the tasting class.

We will participate in a wine and food pairing class, and will be able to sample 5 different wines, as well as learn what type of food goes well with each wine.

Our class will begin at 3:00. After the class is over, we will have a reserved section at Toast & Jam, which features live music and goes from 5:00 - 8:00. We can bring chairs and snacks for Toast and Jam. The event will be limited to the 1st 30 people who sign-up. So far, we have 13 people signed up, with 17 spots remaining!

You aren't required to attend Toast and Jam, but thought it would be a great follow-up to the tasting class! If people would like to carpool to the winery, please contact Megan Stralow if you can be a driver.

Please RSVP by June 12 to Individual Development Director, Megan Stralow via Email at mstralow@lamar.com or via phone at 563-581-9464.

A Letter from our State President

Dear Fellow Jaycees,

By now, you have probably heard about the devastating tornadoes that hit Joplin, MO last Sunday night.

I have been asked what we as Jaycees can do to not only help those dealing with the aftermath in Joplin, but the thousands of others that have been impacted by these severe storms since the beginning of the year.  U.S. Junior Chamber President Joanie Cramer and Foundation President Raj Nadkarni have helped us set up a way that we can help as ONE.

The U.S. Jaycees Foundation has a fund set up for disaster relief for those impacted by the deadly tornadoes that have ripped through our country.  All donations are tax-deductible and 100% of the funds donated will go to helping those in Joplin and other areas that are trying to rebuild their communities.

You can donate in several ways:

1. Personally donate money to the U.S. Jaycees Foundation online at http://www.usjayceefoundation.org and click on the donate link.

2. Send a check made out to U.S. Jaycees Foundation with Joplin Tornado in the memo line and send it to:
US Jaycees Foundation
Attention: Disaster Relief Program - Joplin
7447 S. Lewis Avenue
Tulsa, OK 74136

3. Host a chapter fundraiser to raise money to donate to the Foundation's Disaster Relief Program.  All money raised can be turned in at the June All-State Convention in Clear Lake or at the National Convention in Chicago.

All chapters that raise money for the Foundation's Disaster Relief will be recognized for their efforts at the All State Convention in June.

Finally, I have included below a letter that has been sent to me by National President Joanie about the relief and fundraising efforts that are underway.

Thank you in advance for your assistance in this endeavor!

Best regards,

Paul Crawford

===========

Dear State President and Executive Team,

In addition to the terrible earthquakes and tsunami overseas, this Spring we have had a number of tornadoes that have caused loss of life and property here in our own country.  Since early April, the combined death toll has exceeded 450.  Sadly, as the emergency crews continue to work in Joplin, MO, that number is certain to rise.

The tornado that destroyed the southern half of Joplin last Sunday has affected members of our Jaycee family.  Many of you have called, emailed and texted regarding the 46 members of The Joplin Jaycees.   Missouri's President,  Stephen Coffey, who used to live in the Joplin area, is currently in Joplin assisting with the relief efforts and contacting the chapter members.  Due to the limited cell service available, it will take some time to get specific details.  As we receive information, we will continue to keep you updated.  Please pass along the information to your members, post on Facebook, Tweet, etc.

The US Jaycee Foundation is accepting Tax Deductable donations.  Checks can be made payable to the US Jaycee Foundation and can be mailed to
USJC National Service Center
7447 S. Lewis Ave
Tulsa, OK 74136

Please write "Joplin Tornado" in the memo line so the donation will be marked specifically for the tornado victims.  We will also accept checks during the Annual Meeting in Chicago on Friday, June 10th, from any states, chapters or individuals who wish to present their checks in person.  100% of all money collected will be given to those devastated by the tornado.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

Please continue to keep the 46 members of the Joplin Jaycees, the citizens of Joplin and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Yours In Jaycee Spirit,

President Joanie
