us transport the decorations to our storage area. Also, we can use a
ladder or two to remove the decorations on street lights and park
gazebo. If you would like to help us please contact, Nathan Lange, Commuinty Development VP, natlange75@yahoo.com or Craig Finch, Commuinty Involvement Director, cfinch83@gmail.com We will also have a signup sheet at our January 21 General Membership Meeting.

Upcoming Events in Our Community
The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center
has extended a special invitation to the Dubuque Jaycees to participate
in a special blood drive to be held at its Donor Center on Monday,
January 18. To be eligible for this blood drive, you may not have
donated blood after November 23, 2009. The Mississippi Valley Regional
Blood Center is the sole supplier of blood to patients at both The
Finley and Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque.
The Donor Center is
located at 4867 Asbury Road. The Center will be open on January 18
from 2 to 6:30 pm. For more information, or to make an appointment to
give blood on January 18, e-mail Sharee Hoegerl at shoegerl@mvrbc.com. Walk-in donors will be welcome that day. Thank you for supporting your local blood supply by giving blood on January 18.
There are many excuses re: who can donate blood.
Following are the four most common, and the truth re: blood donation.
Excuse: I take prescription medication.
Truth: Most medications are acceptable, including high
blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid, anti-depressants, asthma and allergy
medications.
Excuse: I have diabetes.
Truth: All diabetics are eligible to donate blood,
even if they require insulin injections.
Excuse: I have high blood pressure.
Truth: If you have high blood pressure, you should see
your doctor and get it under control with medication. Once your blood
pressure is under control, you can donate blood -- even with your medication.
Excuse: I have had cancer.
Truth: If you have been free of cancer for the past 2
years (most types of cancer), you are welcome to once again donate blood.
Travel: Many locations formerly considered deferral
areas are no longer deferral areas. If you have traveled outside the US in the past
year, be sure to ask about your destination; e-mail Sharee at shoegerl@mvrbc.com with your questions.
Tattoos and Piercings: If you received
your tattoo(s) or piercing at a licensed facility in Iowa,
Wisconsin or Missouri, you may donate with no waiting
period. |

Become a Mentor!
The Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service and the Iowa Mentoring Partnership are pleased to recognize January as National Mentoring Month 2010! Included below are nine ideas for how you can become involved this month: 1. Become a mentor in your community. If interested, please visit www.iowamentoring.org to search the directory of certified mentoring programs in your area. 2. Help the Iowa Mentoring Partnership and the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service celebrate National Mentoring Month by attending Mentoring Day on the Hill 2010 (January 28th from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in the First Floor Rotunda of the State Capitol in Des Moines). 3. Stick around after the completion of Mentoring Day on the Hill to recognize four outstanding Iowa mentors at the first annual Excellence in Mentoring Award ceremony. The ceremony will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the East Wing of the State Capitol. 4. Partner with a mentoring organization in your community to create a match activity. 5. Tell five friends about National Mentoring Month. 6. Think about the mentors in your life and post a tribute to them online at www.whomentoredyou.org in honor of Thank Your Mentor Day 2010. The annual day of recognition will formally take place on January 21st. 7. Read the latest research and find resources on mentoring at www.mentoring.org. 8. Serve your community on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January 18, 2010) by becoming a mentor. 9. Make a donation to a mentoring organization in your area. There is no limit to the ways you can recruit, recognize, or celebrate mentors this January. We encourage you to do your part to get involved during National Mentoring Month 2010. For more information on National Mentoring Month, please visit www.nationalmentoringmonth.org Iowa Mentoring Partnership on Facebook We have seen a great response to our request for individuals to join the Iowa Mentoring Partnership's Facebook Group, Click Here to Join, but we would love to recruit more members this January - will you help us make it happen? Please use the link listed above to become a member!
