Consider Sending Us Your Stories Or Your News!

If you open all your chamber emails, you know that this issue contains a lot of notices that we sent out over the last month.  There are a couple of reasons for this.  First, we need your membership renewals.  Second, there are some great offers we are making that seem worth repeating.  And finally, we need more of your stories and your news, without them this newsletter will never be what it could be.

Thanks.

Mark Nielsen,
Executive Director

Your Future, Your Way:
Forging your own path to success (2nd Annual)

Poster:  Click to Download
Date: October 18th
Time: 6:30-7:30 pm
Place:  Rivendell Academy, on Route 25A in Orford, NH
Target Audience: Students, parents, guidance counselors/educators, business community, and the general public.

When the ever-increasing costs of attending 4-year conventional colleges are compared to statistics showing what's needed to succeed in the jobs that will be most available in the next decade, it becomes a real challenge for families and students graduating from high school today to make post-secondary decisions that are both economically and educationally feasible. With the support from the Cohase Chamber of Commerce, the Workforce Development Committee will present its second annual forum to be held Thursday, October 18th from 6:30-7:30 pm at Rivendell Academy located on Route 25A in Orford, NH.

This forum will feature brief presentations followed by an interactive session between the audience and panelists from Plymouth State University; White Mountains Community College; Vermont Technical College; Financial Planning for College; Upper Valley Business & Education Partnership; Hypertherm; Rivendell Academy and River Bend Career & Technical Center.

With this discussion, we will highlight the fact that there are multiple pathways to successful lives and careers right here in the region. Many opportunities are available for those with certificate programs or two-year technical degrees, or students might consider working and taking community college classes that can transfer into a degree program. There are companies offering on-the-job-training and apprenticeships leading to well-paying jobs and providing on-going education, as well.

Another possible outcome is to begin a dialogue amongst the region's business community in which we can expand internship, apprenticeship and job-shadowing opportunities for those interested in staying and working in the region.

Starting at 5:30pm before this forum will be a workshop on College and Career Planning offered by NHHEAF about the financial planning involved with attending college.

We hope you'll join us on October 18th.  For more information, please contact Robert St.Pierre at 802 222-5212 ext.131 or via email at [email protected] or call Nancy Hall at 603 353-4321, or via email at [email protected].

Local Business Assoc
Local Business Associations Come Together:

The Cohase Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a joint breakfast meeting for the regions business associations and economic development groups at the Colatina Exit.  The food was excellent!

In attendance were representatives from 3 Rivers Business Association, Bradford Merchants Association, Haverhill Economic Development Committee, Wells River Action Program, Alletta Chapman, Ian Clark, and the Cohase Chamber of Commerce.  Also attending were VT State Rep. Sarah Copland-Hanzas and VT State Senator Jane Kitchel, freelance writer Polly Tafrate, and the Journal Opinion.

The group agreed that it was a worthwhile endeavor to remain in touch with what each organization is up to.  To that end, the Chamber will post all meeting minutes that are sent to us on the chamber website in a newly created website page. We will create folders for each organization, including town selectboard meeting minutes.

The group also agreed to consider posting their events on a Google calender.  By doing this the Chamber will be able to sync all the calenders and show many of the regions events on the Chamber's website.  This calender is the same calender that you can view on the new "Take 5 Hang 10" website.

Monique Priestley, of MEPriestley will help set up the Google calenders for the associations and Paul Hunt, of Custom Support will ensure that the calenders are synced.

As always, anyone or any organization in our region can place an event on the Chamber website by submitting the required information.

Exec. Director Headshot
Musings on our community:

Fairlee and Orford join the Cohase Chamber of Commerce.

September turns out to have been an important month in the history of the Cohase Chamber of Commerce. After several years of discussions at the board level as to the 'right time' to consider expanding the base region of the Chamber, we decided that the time had arrived. We are very pleased to announce that the Selectboards of both Fairlee and Orford have voted to sign on to the chamber, joining the towns of Bradford, Piermont, Newbury and Haverhill as the core towns for our region. (We also serve businesses and non-profits in the smaller, contiguous towns and villages.)

Over the last several years, twenty-six businesses from Fairlee and Orford have joined the Chamber.   This fact combined with the two towns' geographic proximity was a factor in the decision made by the Selectboards.

The Chamber's board members see the inclusion of our southern neighbors as a natural development and a real opportunity for the entire region. The vast majority of 'beds' for visitors/tourists are in Fairlee, providing cross-marketing opportunities. The business communities also dovetail well.

This year we will be revising our map and guide to fully include the business districts of Fairlee and Orford and over the next several years we will be adding the historic points of interest to our Historic Tour brochure and incorporating this information into our website, www.cohase.org.

Strengthening the ties between all six towns and maximizing cooperative marketing efforts will be high on the Chamber's list of things to focus on as we move ahead.

Welcome, Fairlee and Orford, to the Cohase Chamber of Commerce!

Sincerely,

Marvin Harrison, President, on behalf of the board of directors
