Disclosure; If, When, How to Tell an Employer About Your Disability
If you disclose a disability, will you be able to reassure the employee that the disability will not keep you from being successful in the job? The issue of disclosure is always a delicate balance.  If you choose to disclose a disability, there are a few keys to remember: 1) be positive!  You're a qualified candidate first, a person with a disability second.  2) be prepared to address any questions the employer may have about the disability, and 3) know what accommodations if any will be needed to assist you on the job.  And remember, most accommodations cost $500 or less; if you do need an accommodation, this does not need to be disclosed until employment has been secured.  A job coach can be a great ally and advocate for someone with a disability.

Why is Integrated Employment so Important Anyway?

What did you want to be when you were a young child?  A teacher?  Doctor? Astronaut?  When someone asks you who you are, or "tell me about yourself" do you say your name and your profession?

Society expects people to work, to be paid, and to make their own way. Additionally, work is a way for people to gain status, self definition and to achieve personal goals.  Work is so important to an individuals self worth, that people often define themselves by their job, and the workplace (group) they belong to.

People with disabilities are not different.  It is essential that people be placed into integrated work environments to promote these same feelings of self worth, achievement, and identification.

Employers will find value to hiring people with disabilities as well.  Some benefits include a diverse workforce, a proactive image and tax benefits, just to name a few.
