Student Earned Income Exclusion:
CARF
Understanding how a student's income will affect his/her SSI benefits is very important; it is equally as difficult to understand!  Here's the basics: A child who is blind or disabled "who is a student regularly attending school, college, or university, or a course of vocational or technical training, can have limited earnings that are not counted against his or her Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. The maximum amount of the income exclusion applicable to a student in 2010 is $1,640 per month but not more than $6,600."  Click here to access and save a reference guide.

Greetings!

Welcome to February's edition of Career Support Spotlight!  Thank you for all of your feedback in response to our very first e-newsletter in January!  Due to an overwhelming response to the information on SSI/SSDI rates for 2010, a resource has been added to the CSS website permanently.  You can find a link in the "Quick Links" section to the left of the page.  Please us this resource as much as you need.  We will continue to use this newsletter to keep our stakeholders updated with the latest Supported Employment trends as they apply to the areas supported by CSS.  Please feel free to contact janelle@careersupport.net with any questions or feedback.
New Governor to Promote Job Growth

CARFOn January 26, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell introduced his "Jobs and Opportunity Agenda."  This Legislative package contains 20 pieces of legislation as well as budget amendments, all aimed at promoting job growth, promoting economic development and creating new opportunities for Virginians.  An early prediction prepared by the Virginia Economic Development Partnership estimated that these budget initiatives alone will lead to over $311 Million in new revenue for Virginia over five years, and the creation of over 29,000 new jobs over the next two years.  So hang in there!  Click Here to read the full story!
NCD Calls for Workforce Services for People with Disabilities

The National Council on Disability (NCD) released a report called Workforce Infrastructure in Support of People with Disabilities: Matching Human Resources to Service Needs.  This report addresses current shortages in workforce support services, and looks at what market changes are driving current and future supply of services.  The need for services for Americans with disabilities is expected to increase significantly in coming decades as a result of several factors.  Some of these include an aging elderly population, improvements in child survival rates leading to more birth defects and developmental disabilities than ever before, and as baby boomers retire, fewer human service workers available.
NCD's report calls for better positioning of the human resources sector to be better prepared and to understand the "supply-demand gaps in the disability related workforce and to make plans to fill those gaps."  Research was also aimed to "influence the nature and content of training..."
The report states the need for partnerships among federal departments and agencies, state agencies, and the private sector.  To read more on this report, and specific recommendations, click here.
