Spring Fever
by Dannette Henley, MA, LPC

Kids can smell it in the air...the end of school is near! This awareness comes with the arrival of spring; the renewal of the earth. The days are fresh, warm, and inviting. The children are tired of being cooped up indoors after a long winter are longing to go outside to enjoy the blessings of spring. Thus begins a time-honored battle between children and their parents and teachers.
Spring fever can be tough to diagnose because of its varying symptoms. Some individuals experience an inability to stop daydreaming. Others find it is difficult to focus. There are universal reports of laziness and lack of motivation. Researchers have recently shown that these symptoms have real biological sources. This is due to the loss of vitamins during the long winter months. The cure is to go outdoors and into the sunshine.
The challenge is how to balance enjoying the rejuvenating outdoors with the responsibilities of school and life. Parents and teachers often become frustrated with children during this time of year because of children's lack of effort. Here are a few tips for parents:
- Review and reinforce expectations
- Maintain a structured schedule (spring often brings additional requirements due to sports)
- Adjust homework time so they can play outside after school
- Be flexible during extended daylight hours
- Utilize the outdoors for family time - have a picnic, go on a walk, etc.
Tips for Teachers:
- Employ the use of the outdoors to engage students
- Use out-of-the-ordinary techniques like student-led lessons or classroom drama
- Mix up the schedule for the day
- Use interactive media lessons
