Greetings! Perspectives Counseling Centers

"Love is in the air." Well, at least we notice it more with Valentine's Day in February.  If you are involved in a romantic relationship, it is a good time to assess the atmosphere of your relationship: is it stale and cold?  Or is it warm and inviting?   See below for a some great reflections and resources from Les Morrison, MA, LPC.

Perspectives Counseling Center is committed to serving the needs of our clients and our community.  We are grateful for your continued support and referrals.  We will keep you updated on all of our upcoming workshops, seminars and groups for children, teens and adults.

What Better Time to Assess Your Relationship?    hearts

By Les Morrison, MA, LPC

In their book about marriage, Love and War, John and Stasi Eldredge write: "You've been entrusted with the heart of another human being.  Whatever else your life's great mission will entail, loving and defending this heart next to you is part of your great quest."  Greg Smalley, in his book, The Wholehearted Marriage, writes:  "The foundation of a great marriage is the state of your heart."

Why the emphasis on your heart?  Because intimacy and deep connection occurs effortlessly and naturally when hearts are open to one another; when you feel emotionally "safe" with one another.  Conversely, withdrawal and disconnection is inevitable when hearts are closed to one another, when you feel emotionally "unsafe" with one another.

What can cause your spouse to not feel safe (have a closed heart) with you?  Examples may be criticism, sarcasm, rejection, disrespect, as well as being ignored, judged, belittled or controlled.

What can cause your spouse to feel safe (have an open heart) with you?   Examples may be when you listen, validate feelings, express gratitude, and offer affirmation, affection and acceptance.

If you really want to experience true intimacy with your spouse, doesn't it make sense that you would do all you can to avoid doing the things that lead to withdrawal and pour your efforts into what has the potential for deep connection with one another?
