At the start of 2011, I chose three words for the year that focused on slowing down and breeeaaaathhhing. I encased the typed words in a small metal frame with graphics of a lazy wooded path and set it on my desk. Throughout the year, one glance at my paper coping skill helped me reframe my felt frenzy and consider a few things.
It was helpful. In no way have I mastered the meaning behind the words, so they will stay in residence for 2012. A few days ago, I sat down and used the first letters of each month to write up ideas of how to focus on small things, recall good things, and encourage myself to act. I thought you might be interested.
January - Jot down two good things that happened to you in 2011.
February - Free up space - whether on a hard drive, in a closet, or the garage.
March - Mend that seam in a torn shirt, or a wounded relationship.
April - Adapt to a change that occurred in 2011 and look for the silver lining.
May - Meditate on a positive difference you made in someone's life.
June - Jazz up your environment with something fresh and new, like a plant, colors, or music.
July - Journey through the country or world with a travel DVD or book.
August - Ask yourself, "What's one thing I'd like to accomplish in 2012?" then do it.
September - Subtract one criticism of yourself and add a positive one instead.
October - Own the responsibility you have for your life and your choices.
November - Notice something that you otherwise might miss, like a bird in flight.
December - Determine to modify expectations of yourself and others.
By the way, my three words were deliberate, de-stress, and simplify. Have a great 2012!
