Greetings!
It is difficult to even begin to think about Fall coming, but here it comes! The weather is still warm right now and September often brings us an Indian summer. Don't you just want to squeeze every morsel out of it? After that, Winter comes and the 'blahs' that can plague many of us during the colder months of the year.
Perspectives has some great things planned for the Fall and Winter. Stay connected with us, and we'll keep you updated on all of our workshops, seminars and groups for children, teens and adults.
See below for an informative article about Seasonal Affective Disorder from Tricia Stehle, LMSW.

Seasonal Affective Disorder byTricia Stehle, LMSW

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects millions of us in the Midwest. Commonly, it is thought to hit when the first snow falls, but it may actually start as early as September or October.
It is more likely to affect:
- Women
- Individuals between the ages of 15 and 55
- Those with a relative that has been affected by SAD
- People who live in areas where the winter days are very short and daylight is sparse
Those of us in the Midwest are especially prone to suffering from SAD (Source: Healthwise/WebMd, 2010). Shockingly, SAD can last until April or May! In addition, an individual may have no history of it but can develop it at any point in time.
Typical symptoms include:
- Feeling sad and/or grumpy spontaneously
- Eating more carbohydrates
- Weight gain
- Loss of interest in your normal activities
- Sleeping more, and feeling more drowsy during the day
Because SAD is such a common condition in the Midwestern section of the United States, it deserves attention and consideration in terms of preparing for the possibility of it appearing. It is advised that if you and/or a loved one spontaneously develop the prior symptoms to seek help. Help is available and SAD can worsen without treatment.
Treatment for SAD typically consists of:
Light Therapy:Light boxes can be purchased that stimulate sunlight. A person will be exposed to the light for a designated period of time each day that helps them feel more refreshed, as we typically do in the summer months.
Counseling: Typically, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is used to help one change their negative thoughts that often coincide with depressed mood and lack of motivation.
Antidepressant Medication: Medications may be necessary for recovery.
If you or anyone you know develops symptoms of SAD, please do not hesitate to contact Tricia Stehle or any other member of our staff. We can help!
