Greetings!

There's a place we'd like to avoid if it were possible.  Let's call it the grunt line of life.  It is the reality we live with - work of all kinds, more work, and next week the same.  It is where we contend with personal stressors, disappointments, unmet needs and unwelcomed conflicts and feeling dissatisfied.  The grunt line is where daily battles of all kinds happen. The grunt line occasionally gets sprinkled with sugar and spice and some things nice.  That's the exception to the grunt line's rules.  It is what it is.  Read more below from Elaine Booth on finding happiness in our everyday life.

Life on the Grunt Line

Elaine Booth, LMSW

As a therapist, I have concluded that many unhappy feelings come because we'd like the grunt of life to be the exception and the sugar, spice, and so much nice to be the rule.  Our pursuit for happiness should be fulfilled, right?  We want to feel satisfied and happy.  But from where I sit as a therapist, I've recognized that to feel happier it is critical for us is to accept that life is a lot of ordinary, unexciting tasks we must do just to keep moving forward.  If we stop demanding that life be more than it is, we could learn to find pleasure and satisfaction in everyday events.

Many people in counseling say that their goal  is "to be happy."   "What will make you happy?"   "I don't know."

Let's accept that life on the grunt line is normal for everyone.  Daily life certainly offers satisfying parts.  Do we look for them?  Appreciate them?  Here are some ideas to help:

Hold back on expectations that are too lofty.  Life is work and sometimes life is fun.  Look for small pleasures every day.  Enjoy the warmth of the sun or an ice cream cone after work.

Appreciate the fact that life is short.  Live in such a way that there will be as few regrets as possible at the end.

Plan times of enjoyment and accept them for what they are.  The fact is, moments of pleasure come to an end and it's back to the grunt line.  Be thankful for the pleasure and accept the fact that having work to do on the grunt line does give us that very important sense of purpose.

Prepare for the day with an attitude of gratitude.  Attitude determines altitude - even emotionally.  I know....life can be hard, but be thankful for resources of all kinds that we have to help us along the way.  Gratitude is without doubt a component of happiness (satisfaction, pleasure, joy, contentment.....)

You can decide to invest in the glass-half-full strategy that will yield satisfying results.....even on the grunt line of life.  Recently, I used two mushy, age-spotted bananas to make one praiseworthy loaf of banana chocolate chip walnut bread.  Those bananas could have ended up in the trash...but what a joy to make something so wonderful from something not so great.

If you or anyone you know could use some guidance toward living life fully, we can help.  Contact us at (248) 244-8644.
