The Myths of PMDD
Michelle Jeffers, MS, LLP
PMDD is not just severe PMS. While most women report some physical and emotional symptoms associated with menstruation, such as painful cramps, backaches, headaches and increased sensitivity, these symptoms are usually fairly mild.
PMDD, however, is a condition estimated to effect between 2-10% of women of childbearing age. This disorder is marked by a more serious disruption in mood and functioning approximately 1-2 weeks prior to menstruation, and improving 1-2 days after menstruation has started.
Many women mistakenly dismiss these serious symptoms as PMS and have related that they "just thought that's the way it was" and "everybody feels like this around their period." Other women report feeling so much better once their cycle begins, that they forget how badly they were impacted.
A woman with PMDD may experience symptoms of depression, a blue mood, hopelessness, and even thoughts about death. Other significant symptoms may include anger, intense irritation, increased conflict with others and a lack of patience. Women may also report anxiety and panic-like symptoms, a loss of interest in hobbies, work, family and social activities around this time. Additionally, problems with sleep, energy level, appetite and concentration may also be reported. Clearly, these symptoms can be very disruptive to a family, job or social life.
If you suspect that you or someone that you care about may be experiencing PMDD, a proper diagnosis is essential and you should consult with your physician, particularly if someone is experiencing depressive symptoms. If you do have PMDD, your doctor will be able to help. Your doctor may also suggest counseling to help you gain strategies to cope with depression and anxiety. Counseling can also help you deal with the emotional impact and possible social or professional disruption caused by the disorder.
