How do I Love You?

Let Me Draw You a Picture...

Lynne Stillwell, MA, LPC

You worked hard to be the best you could be.  You were sensitive, compassionate, interested and SO attentive.  Remember those first feelings for each other?  They were both exhilarating and scary: fraught with unknown steps.  Your efforts led to a commitment and maybe vows/promises to each other that included a vague thought: "to have and to hold."  How do you think you have done with "holding" on to what you had?

Has the busy-ness of life taken the place of those finer qualities that you showed early on?  Have you grown apart?  Do you feel disconnected?  You didn't fall out of love, but along the way you stumbled on keeping that starry-eyed promise.

Those first big feelings were not love, but infatuation. "Most love...starts out as [infatuation], but most [infatuation] never evolves into love" (Dr. Dorothy Tennov).   Repairing your relationship is not about chocolate or flowers.  It is about reconnecting and holding onto the dream and promise.

Connection is a mental state of valuing and affection.  It works like an invisible lifeline that connects you emotionally to the person you are thinking about.

On a piece of paper, draw a simple house with two walls and a roof.  Add a stream running through the property.  Now look at this picture and imagine this represents your relationship.  You and your significant other represent either wall.  The roof is the relationship, each need to be strong and maintained.  The stream represents a strong and steady current of intent, compassion and value that flows through your lives.

Give your picture to your loved one on Valentine's Day and tell them that it represents what you want your relationship to be like.  Tell them that you want to practice being more in the relationship and build better connections.  Tell them how they add value to your life.  If you still need flowers, get out the crayons, sit down and color them in together.  They will smell sweeter and last longer.

Our caring counselors can help mend your relationship.  Please call 248-244-8644 if we can assist you in any way.

Thank you for your continued trust and confidence!

Sincerely,
