Greetings!

New Year, new choices, new opportunities to make a difference in our life and those around us. Many of us make a new year resolution to better ourselves. John Milton, 1608-1674, said, "The command of one's self is the greatest empire a man can aspire unto, and consequently, to be subject to our own passions is the most grievous slavery. He who best governs himself is best fitted to govern others. He who reigns within himself and rules his passions, desires, and fears is more than a king." At Perspectives Counseling Centers, we continue to strive to improve ourselves as well. In 2011, Perspectives will continue to provide new choices and new opportunities to serve our clients. See below for some food for thought as we begin the New Year.

New Year's Resolutions

Elaine Booth, LMSW

What is the most important thing is about making New Year resolutions?

It is having a purpose or primary goal. We must accept the importance, necessity, and value of our resolution. We have to stop saying "we'll try" because that gives failure a chance. To be resolute means to be purposeful and decided. We must be deliberate and intentional in our efforts to reach our goal.  Here's an important note. A goal is something over which we have exclusive influence regarding the outcome. We alone can make the thing happen.  A desire is like a goal except that a person does not have exclusive influence over the outcome. Make sure your New Year resolution is a goal and not a desire.

Do you know what the biggest obstacles are to sustaining and attaining a New Year resolution?

It is failure to plan and prepare, and a lack of self-discipline.

What goals for 2011 do we have?

Changing a trait or habit? Working on spiritual, physical, social or financial issues? Whatever it is, follow these simple guidelines:
  • Keep it simple. Choose one thing to address in your life and be realistic about it.

  • Write down your plan. You can find online resources for goal setting worksheets. (www.worksheetplace.com)

  • Answer the Who, What, When, Where, How, and Why questions about your resolution.

  • Have a due date, identify possible challenges and hindrances, identify defensive strategies to use in the face of challenges, and explore what will happen if you do reach your goal and what will happen if you don't. Be sure to include the mental health aspect of achievement and failure.
If you or someone you know needs help and encouragement along the way for a more prosperous and healthful New Year, call Perspectives Counseling Centers at 248-244-8644 or 586-268-6712.
