POLL INDICATES PROCESS SERVERS ARE PREFERRED PROVIDER
Serve-Now.com recently conducted a poll of legal professionals to determine the best option to get papers served: a sheriff or a process server. One hundred paralegals, legal assistants, and legal administrators participated.
The results were based on:
- Speed of Service
- Customer Service
- Knowledge of Laws
- Success Rate
- Average Cost

Preferred Provider
When asked who their preferred provider is, 78% use process servers and 19% use sheriffs.
"The only time I use a sheriff is if it is an area where I cannot locate a reasonably priced process server or it is someone in jail or a government entity." - Jaclyn Wissmueller (Legal Assistant)
Speed
The poll indicated that process servers are faster 90% of the time. (Nine out of ten times the process server is faster.)
"Over my career, I have found private process servers to be much faster in getting process served as the sheriff's office generally has other things going on." - Theresa Prater (Paralegal)
Customer Service
Process servers were rated higher for customer service with 4.28/5 vs. 2.55/5.
"Private process servers have to compete in the marketplace and know they can be replaced if they don't give good service." - Robert Stover (Paralegal)
Knowledge of Laws
When it comes to rules of civil procedure, 58% indicated that the process
server has a better knowledge of the laws and 29% said it made no difference.
Success Rate
The survey participants reported process servers were 92% more likely to successfully effectuate service.
Average Cost
The average cost for process servers was only $14.41 more than the average cost of using a sheriff and that drops significantly for high-volume serves.
While there may be scenarios where the sheriff (or constable or marshall) is the only option for service of process for first attempts or enforceable papers such as warrants...on the whole, legal professionals were more satisfied when choosing a private process server.
