    Cushing's Disease

We have a dog, let's call him Iron Dog, who comes in and for the longest time, no one could ever figure out why he was loosing hair down to the skin and getting almost like an infection on his back. He was put on various medications, treated for thyroid disorder, allergies and so forth.Just recently Iron Dog was tested for Cushing's Disease and voila he tested positive!!

Since then Iron Dog has been put on oral medication and is a completely different dog! He is more active, his hair is growing back, his infected looking back is healing, he looks healthy and you would never guess he has Cushing's Disease!

Don't let Age be the reason or excuse for your pet's ailments!

    What is it?

A condition in middle to older dogs often mistaken as the natural aging process. The big reason why the disease often goes undetected is because the syptoms do not occur immediatly, but rather gradually over years! The condition is a condition that results from the chronic overproduction of too much Glucocorticoid in the body - the production of too much adrenal hormone, in particular corticosteroids. It can be naturally occurring or due to over administration of corticosteroids such as prednisone. The latter is easy to cure - just cut out the corticosteroid administration slowly to allow the body to return to normal function.".

    Symptoms?

    • Increased drinking and increased urination
    • Increased appetite and weight gain
    • Hair loss, thinning of the skin, calcified lumps in the skin, susceptibility to skin infections and diabetes.

    Treatment?

    • 80% of the time the dog will respond to oral medication such as:
      • Lysodren
      •  Trilostane

      • Ketoconazale

      • L-deprenyl
    • Sometime surgery if an Adrenal Tumor is found and does not respond to oral medication.
    • If it is due to too much administration of corticosteroids, then just cut out the corticosteroids slowly (such as prednisone ).
