100 in 100 Veterans Housing Initiative a Success
In September, a 100 day goal was accomplished of permanently housing 100 chronically homeless people in our community.  Houston/Harris County Continuum of Care members from key agencies--the Veterans Administration, Houston and Harris County Housing Authorities, nonprofit homeless service providers, and Coalition for the Homeless staff--joined forces to systemically plan for quickly helping chronically homeless veterans enter the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program.

Continuum of Care Success

The planning and service coordination is a prime example of what the Continuum of Care is put in place to accomplish--implementing strategies to end homelessness at a community level, across multiple funding streams and providers.  The process was initiated through the Rapid Results Bootcamp brought to Houston in May through the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, Community Solutions, and Schaffer Consulting.  We would like to thank Mark Thiele of the Houston Housing Authority for acting as the project leader in  bringing together partners from across homeless and mainstream services to quickly plan and implement meaningful change.

Starbucks Employees
Make
10,000 Hygeine Kits

Last week, store managers in town for the Starbucks Global Partner Conference put to use their rapid-fire preparation skills to put together 10,000 hygeine kits in a matter of just a few hours.  Street outreach and shelter partners picked up the kits to share with people who are experiencing homelessness.  Thank you to Consumer Advisory Council and US Vets tenants for leading the Starbucks volunteers!

Grant Update

At the September CoC Steering Committee meeting, local priorities for new permanent supportive housing funding through the McKinney-Vento CoC grant were approved.

If your organization is considering applying, please review on the Coalition's website and reach out to Pamela Wyatt or Thuan Huynh for assistance.

As you might have noticed, the CoC Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) is being released later than usual this year due to changes associated with the new CoC Program Rule. Please keep an eye out for the NOFA and local grant process timelines late October/early November.
