Charrette Process Kicks Off Community Action Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness
The Coalition provided lead agency duties as the Continuum of Care participated in input and dialogue sessions during the week of August 20.

Mayor Annise Parker opened the event on Monday morning and was joined by hundreds of Continuum of Care stakeholders, including the full spectrum of consumers, concerned community members, non-profit service providers, and government officials.  Experts from across the nation joined the local conversation to offer ideas about strategies that can help reduce homelessness.

The robust community discussion will result in the Charrette report and recommendations to create an action plan for systemically preventing and ending homelessness in Houston, Harris County, and Fort Bend County.

Issue Areas Consist Of
  • Integrating Housing and Services
  • Performance and Accountability
  • Right-Sizing the CoC Housing Models
  • Prevention and Diversion from Homelessness
  • Coordinated Access to Services and Housing
  • Building Political Will and Advocacy
The public is encouraged to attend the presentation of the final report on Tuesday August 28, 2012 at the Harris County Department of Education, 6300 Irvington Boulevard, Houston, Texas 77022 in the 5th floor Conference Center over the parking garage. The event is open to the public and entirely free of charge with free parking.

The Charrette is part of a comprehensive Priority Community technical assistance plan sponsored by HUD and the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness.

2012 Homeless Needs Assessment
An annual study resulting from interviews of more than 500 people experiencing homelessness in our community has been released.  The report, entitled Perceived Needs of Homeless Persons in Houston/Harris County, 2012, is the result of a partnership between academia, people who have experienced homelessness, service providers, and community volunteers.

The report analyzes triggers of homelessness, characteristics of people who are experiencing homelessness, and service needs.

The Coalition hosted sixty-five members of the Homeless Services Coordinating Council on August 16th for a presentation of the 2012 Community Needs Assessment Report by Dr. Cathy Troisi, Associate Professor UT School of Public Health and Gary Grier, the Coalition's Director of Community Engagement.

Quarterly lunch & learn opportunities are free to members of the Homeless Services Coordinating Council. To join the Coordinating Council, see the application and information packet.

The next lunch and learn will be featured on October 18th from 11:30 to 1pm and will cover an action step implementation from the Charrette final report.
