Houston's Recovery Oriented Systems of Care "First Call" Initiative Featured on SAMHSA Website

"Our goal with First Call is to develop a training that will enable lay community members to be competent and willing to approach a person who has a substance use problem and to offer encouragement and hope... We want to recognize the power of the community to heal and sustain people. We are working towards a world where one community member encourages another and invites the other to seek help without shame. The strategy is intended to create positive outcomes related to earlier attraction to-and engagement with-the prospect of substance abuse recovery."

 Continuum of Care Charrette

The Houston-area Continuum of Care is gearing up for a charrette planning process the week of August 20 that will result in a multi-year action plan.  This plan will drive funding and service strategies to help people quickly exit homelessness and receive the ongoing supports and housing they need.

Thanks to community and consumer input of over 170 people during four meetings in June the Charrette Steering Committee has confirmed the Issue Areas for the Charrette and the proposed schedule. You and your agency's participation in the Charrette is crucial to creating a community action plan that addresses these issues. Please mark your calendar for the appropriate dates and times most important to you.
HUD Releases Continuum of Care Program Interim Rule

Just in time for the National Conference on Ending Homelessness and in preparation for the 2012 Continuum of Care Notice of Funding Availability, HUD has reached another step in implementing the HEARTH Act.  The Continuum of Care Program Interim Rule makes significent changes to the way our community will plan and implement its strategies for preventing and ending homelessness.

Be sure to read the interim rule, watch the HUD webinars, and be on the look-out for our community's meetings to prepare for this year's grant process.
