Welcome to the Tollefson Enterprises Newsletter |
Greetings!
6 days ago I wrote and published an article, attempting to mentally work out an issue that a coachee approached me with. Once the article hit the internet through my HUB site, the response was much larger than I could ever wish for. From the many responses I received, there are a lot of survivors who identified. Scores of survivors report being "stuck" in the same position after many successful years of recovery. The Coachee asked, "I have work so hard and made many positive changes in my life since I incorporated, but after the loss of my loving partner a year ago, I have found myself back in old destructive patterns. I know I should not do them and I do not seem to be able to break the pattern. I want to go back to my healthy ways." "Why?" "I want my recovery back." Therefore even after many successful years of stabilization and growth, a life trauma can drive a person back into familiar relationship that had be dormant for years. An old traumatic mindset and life style quickly embeds into the person's daily routine and "perceived excitement" returns. Before the person can recognize what is happening, it is too late. Why? Trauma Thrill! "I discovered a common relapse connection that occurs in many of my life coaching coachees who had experienced abuse or trauma in their childhood. The relapse connection I discovered I will call the "trauma thrill". A trauma thrill is the act of reconnecting to an old trauma relationship, mindset and lifestyle due to going through a new traumatic experience. The automatic response of the Core Self is to protect self by invoking old defensive patterns to stop the pain of the recent event even after years of successful growth and recovery. The person will continue the old patterns even though they may be destructive. At this point, blame, shame and guilt enter back into his or her life, due to feeling of failure and betrayal to their recovery." Learn by reading more on the subject of trauma thrill, click here. Sincerely,

Testimony of Recovery The first time I met Dr. Bill and learned so much from him. He taught me how to look at things in a new way and also pointed out to me that holding onto the clarification notebook and reading the mini letters within the three-inch binder were just re-traumatizing me. That was when I shredded one page at a time, no longer allowing myself to read and hold onto the past. To this day, I am shredding potentially damaging papers that I find around my place. I cannot change the past, so why hold onto things that are not healthy for me? Why waste all my energy dwelling on what happened to me, when instead I should be looking at how much I have accomplished in spite of all that trauma?
The keys to success are hard work, determination, perseverance, having a support system, and knowing when to ask for help. I now believe that anything is possible, and that challenges can be overcome. Taking the time to see my life in a whole new perspective gives me a greater appreciation of what my strengths are, as I continue on with my journey towards recovery.
