Solarize Port Townsend: Enroll By April 30

The enrollment deadline is fast approaching for "Solarize PortPackard-Larkin_..._web_ Townsend," our bulk purchasing and installation program. Residents of Port Townsend and east Jefferson County who install grid-tied solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with Power Trip Energy between April and June 2012 will receive cash rebates of $700 per kilowatt (maximum rebate of $5,000 per customer).

We have added two more orientation sessions in advance of the April 30 enrollment deadline:

Chimacum - Saturday, March 10 from 1 - 2:30 PM at the Chimacum Grange, located at Hwy 19 and West Valley Rd across from the school.

Port Townsend - Saturday, April 21 from 2 - 3:30 PM at the PT Community Center, located in Uptown across from Aldrich's Market. In conjunction with Earth Day festivities!

The rebates are direct from Power Trip Energy Corp. We achieve savings through bulk purchasing and streamlined installations in a confined geographic area. You can learn more by attending an orientation, calling us at 360-643-3080, or visiting www.solarizePT.com.

             Community Solar Project Powers Airport

Power Trip Energy is proud to be the designer/installer and a part owner of Jefferson County's first Community Solar project, located on Port of Port Townsend property at the county airport.

The 17-kW grid-tied, ground-mounted PV system makes Jefferson County International Airport the first airfield in the state with operational reliance on solar power. The 88 panels produce enough electricity to run the airport's runway lights and navigational beacon, as well as one of the tenant businesses.

Power Trip Energy Suggests Revisions
to Proposed Fire Code

FireCode_Waknitz-for-web.

This 2-kW solar PV array on a Port Angeles client's building (pictured here) would be prohibited by the draft 2012 International Fire Code.

Power Trip Energy took notice when we received the most recent update of the International Fire Code (IFC). Our close reading uncovered provisions that would limit the rooftop area used for solar PV installations. These changes, if adopted by the Washington State Legislature, could begin to be enforced as early as June 2013.

The reason for roof setbacks is to ensure that firefighters can access every roof plane of a home to "ventilate" the roof by cutting holes near the peak. The draft code proposes 3-foot setbacks from the roof peak and one or more 3-foot wide pathways from the gutter to the peak for each roof plane containing solar modules.

By our estimates, 80% of PV systems allowed under the current code would have to be reduced in size or made more expensive. Some of our recently installed systems would have to be reduced in size by 75% under the new code.

Power Trip Energy, together with other solar advocates, is participating in the draft review process. Solar Agent Jeff Randall attended a hearing in Olympia and has submitted a proposed amendment that would exempt single-family residential PV installations from the rooftop setback requirements.
