The Conversation is Moving Along
with the Self Sufficiency Goal
Over 50 individuals from the community and 16 different organizations are working together to put their collective energy towards improving the financial stability of Douglas County residents that are economically disadvantaged or have experienced life changing events.
In 2011, over 16,000 individuals sought emergency food, shelter, rent, and utility assistance from Community Partners. That's just one of the reasons why we are developing plans to strengthen programs that promote financial independence and economic security.
Community Partners want to:
- Improve Access to Emergency Services such as food, shelter, and clothing, and offer programs that help individuals move out of crisis.
- Insure that families and individuals keep their existing housing or attain Affordable Housing through rental or ownership.
- Deliver easy to access job training so that individuals can be Gainfully Employed, and supports to keep a job so that eventually, they can get a better job.

These forward-thinking Initiatives, made possible through the leadership and funding from United Way, will enable our community to more efficiently and effectively serve people who are in crisis so that these same people won't need to access emergency services on a regular basis. By pulling together a variety of community resources, the United Way and its Community Partners are working to ensure that everyone in Douglas County has access to affordable housing, and that they have the opportunity to hold stable jobs and become financially stable.

Great Programs Are In Place This Summer
Under the Education Goal

Nearly 1 in 5 students in Lawrence do not graduate from high school. The United Way and its Community Partners want to change that by collaborating to remove the barriers to success and see that all students have the help they need to achieve. Since studies have shown that 5th grade students who are behind in math and reading are four times more likely to drop out of school, we are focusing our energy and resources on ensuring kids in Lawrence use their summer vacations to stay sharp. Thanks to the help of generous community donors like you, United Way is partnering with the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence to provide fun and educational support for 800 youth served at five sites as part of the organization's Summer Enrichment Program. Not only will this essential partnership help prevent "summer learning loss," it will help these students succeed in school.
