Supporting Teachers and Classrooms
Ms Ransom Class 2Our classroom support program is near the end of its second year.  The goal of the program is to increase the exposure and accessibility to a variety of African-American children's books for teachers and students.  Participating teachers meet with our staff and discuss the needs and opportunities available through the program.  One component of the program involves monthly book loans to teachers for review and incorporation into their classrooms as they deem appropriate. We are getting great feedback from the participating teachers:

During independent/buddy reading, my kids love the books that you bring to the classroom! Although I put out other books that go with the theme we are working on, they love choosing these books! When I talked to the other kindergarten and first grade teachers here, they feel the same way. I'm so glad that you have this program and we look forward to seeing you come in with new books every month!
-Ms. Ransom, Kindergarten Teacher

I am taking this moment to state how helpful the Brown Baby Reads book drop has been to my classroom. The variety of books featuring children of color has allowed many of my students to see themselves in situations that they would not have been able to make connections with other text. My children use the books in their personally selected books in the classroom.  I hope this program continues and grows. I recommend this program. I am sure many teachers could benefit as I have. -Ms. Hamilton, 1st Grade Teacher

We will continue to work towards serving teachers and classrooms to enhance all students learning.

Community Connections
Many community organizations do an amazing job serving the needs of our young people, and we are committed to partnering with them to help bring additional resources to the children they serve.   We assist already-established programs to increase the amount of books for the children in their programs.  We specialize in providing high-interest African-American children's books.

family focus

One of those community partners is Family Focus Our Place.  We provided high-interest chapter books with African-American main characters for their after-school program.  The after-school program had a library of books for their students, but lacked an extensive collection of books with African-American

characters.

We also worked with the organization to provide their teen mMassa and babyoms with book bundles for their new arrivals during the holiday season.  The bundle consisted of onesies and

baby board books.

We will continue to work with community organizations to meet the literacy needs of the children and youth in our communities.
