Greetings!
As of September 1, 2009, the State of California is now certifiying Massage Practitioners and Massage Therapists. The good news for all of us practicing massage or entering the profession is we now have a voluntary certification which is recognized statewide and supercedes more onerous laws that may be in place in various parts of the state, (i.e. Thousand Oaks and Orange County require a minimum of 1000hrs to practice massage, and some municipalities require exhorbitant permitting fees). Locally, our requirements have been pretty minimal (200hrs minimum requirement and $25 Santa Barbara County permit fee, $50 Santa Barbara City permit fee). State Certification also restricts usage of the titles "Certified Massage Practitioner" and "Certified Massage Therapist" to those who have received certification. The Practitioner title requires 250 hours of training from one school and the Therapist title requires 500 hours of training. Local business license fees still apply. For more information on State certification go to: www.camtc.org.
Goleta City is now considering raising their minimum-hour requirements commensurate to or more than the State Certification standards. The city of Goleta is holding a town meeting to discuss proposed changes in the minimum-hour requirement on Wednesday, September 9, 1:00pm at City Council Chambers, Goleta City Hall, 130 Cremona Drive, Suite B, Goleta, California 93117. The general public are invited for public comment.
This fall we are offering a variety of short courses for our technician graduates who want to meet the new State certification or local municipality requirements. Massage Technician graduates who increase their hours to 250 or 550 may trade their former certificate of completion for a Massage Practitioner or Massage Therapist. See below for upcoming classes or give us a call at 805 966-5802. |

"Where Lives Change"
I love that BTI's tag line is "Where Lives Change". I know this holds true for me, as well as so many other therapists and friends who have gone through BTI. The Body Therapy Institute is an amazing place. When I first attended school there I was searching for peace and tranquility. Through BTI's program, teachers, and other students, I not only found what I was looking for, but ascertained the skills to share it with others as well.
I came to BTI with classical training in dance (I was one of those girls that did ballet six days a week, several hours a day as a kid). I later added many more genres, including intensive study in Somatic Movement Therapy.
My Somatic background definitely gets integrated into my bodywork sessions. As an athlete, my knowledge of the body is not just book-learned, but experienced first hand. When I'm working with a client, I draw upon my somatic awareness with each session. Everything is connected and often times pain or relief is generated from areas we normally wouldn't associate with a specific area.
I do a lot of deep work. I focus on specific areas and am able to incorporate it into a full body massage. When I worked in Oakland for a year, the majority of my regular clients were all ex-football players - really big burly men (which may seem pretty funny, since I'm actually fairly small). But they loved my work because I was able to understand an athelete's body and really dig deeply into their muscles.
I now have a private practice in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. I also work for Spa Alliance in SB at the high end resort hotels and bed & breakfasts.
