Walter Conlan, III, MD, CWSP
Colleagues,
I hope that you all are having a great fall.
Looking back over the past 11 years since I became ABWM certified, it is amazing how blessed I have been to have mentors who guided me to where I am today. When I first started as a "wound physician" in 1996, my education was mostly limited to my empiric treatment on patients. Eventually, I heard about different wound care organizations and discovered for myself a whole new world out there!

"Dot is a wonderful friend
and colleague. Through
her example, I came to realize
that going the "extra mile" for
our patients needs to be the
standard in wound care."
|
One of the important events in my professional life has been the good fortune to work with Dot Weir, RN, CWON, CWS. As many of you know, she was a Founding Member, as well as Past President of the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care. Dot is a wonderful friend and colleague. Through her example, I came to realize that going the "extra mile" for our patients needs to be the standard in wound care. Dot has encouraged everyone in our clinics get certified through the ABWM.
When I started attending wound conferences, I realized very quickly that wound care was my passion. It was at that moment that I decided to take the CWS exam.
Studying for the exam was a challenging, yet gratifying, experience. I read and read. Since I never had a residency in wound care (who has?), I did not know if I would make the cut. After taking the exam, I was somewhat confident but unsure if I passed. The moment I found out that I passed was one of the most gratifying experiences of my life. Being a CWS meant that I belonged in wound care. I finally attained an objective measure that I was providing good care.
Becoming a CWS was a pivotal moment in my career. It has helped me expand my professional growth. Patients, colleagues, hospitals, wound centers, and insurance companies all look favorably on my certification as a CWS and now CWSP.
Sincerely,
Walter Conlan, III, MD, CWSP ABWM President

Share YOUR Journey! Get Featured in Upcoming Newsletters!
As Dr. Conlan mentioned, the path to wound certification varies for everyone, but the result is immensely rewarding. The passion for wound care is significantly influenced by your peers, your patients and your experiences on the ground floor. Often times the drive towards certification for Diplomates and Associates of the ABWM is compelled not by the desire for compensation or personal recognition, but rather by the desire to achieve a greater quality of care for their patients. We want to hear from you! We want to know what has driven your desire to become involved in wound care, and what compelled you to make known to your patients, your colleagues, and your industry that you are an expert in the field. We want to hear stories in which you applied your certification to improve the life and livelihood of your patient. Certification through ABWM does just that and we want to hear about your journey! Please send your journey stories and photos to info@abwmcertified.org in order to be featured in upcoming newsletters. |
