President's Message
Walter Conlan, III, MD, CWSP

Colleagues,

I hope that you are having a wonderful summer. The ABWM wants to help your practice grow! Looking back on my career, I am struck by the fact that my professional growth coincided with attaining my CWS status in 2001. When I became a CWS, I became significantly more accepted as an expert in wound care. Shortly thereafter, I decided to dedicate my entire practice to wound care, and I encouraged others to seek certification. As time has passed, most of the staff at our wound centers has become certified. Our centers take great pride in this, which has translated into better patient care, higher retention of staff, and more patients.

Sometimes it may seem like industry exams and certifications are just another chore on a never-ending "To Do" list. Throughout the years, I have found that Diplomates and Associates of the ABWM have the unique opportunity to use their certifications to expand their practice or career, and their influence in wound care. In an age of managed care, and possible universal care, those "decision-makers" will choose who will see our patients. Let's use our certifications to separate ourselves from the pack!

Certification from the ABWM will demonstrate your dedication to the field of wound management, improve quality of care for your patients, and can help you market yourself. In closing, I invite you to send me your story. How has certification helped you, or how will it? Feel free to call me or write if there is anything the ABWM can do to help your certification be of greater benefit to you!

Sincerely,

Walter Conlan, III, MD, CWSP
