Sara's container
A good use of dwarf Butterfly Bush (Buddleia) 'Lo and Behold Blue Chip' is in containers. This is simply and elegantly mixed with Geraniums (Pelargonium) and an annual Euphorbia 'Diamond Frost'. Makes an easy and impressive, long-lasting container!     Thanks Sara M.!

Question of the Week

"Fall is for planting...Why?"

Mark answers: Any time can be good for planting as long as you take into consideration what you need to do for success given the conditions of the season.

Fall simply provides a number of conditions that work in our favor making planting easier with greater success. To start with, temperatures are lower, the days are shorter, the sun is not high in the sky providing less intensity and all this together means plants don't dry out as quickly so they loose moisture at a far less rapid pace. The next thing to consider is that the soil and ground temperatures stay warm, and this encourages good root growth even when the top is not growing and is likely loosing leaves and/or going dormant.

The warm soil temps also aid many of the organic planting fertilizers as these products rely on soil microbes to break them down to release the nutrients the plants need.
