Spring Bloomers Now!
spring bloomers
Clockwise from top left: Polemonium 'Touch of Class', Pulmonaria 'Mrs. Moon', 'Brunnera 'Jack Frost' and Helleborus  'Royal Heritage Hybrids'
No, it's not too early to start thinking about spring, especially when it comes to perennials and planting some early color and interest in the borders. Getting their roots well established before the ground freezes helps them over-winter with an adequate 'anchor' protecting them from frost heaves and helping them emerge healthy and looking good in spring!
Plants with interesting spring foliage like Brunnera (Siberian Bugloss) and Pulmonaria (Lungwort) look great, even before they bloom thanks to their leaves. Both form neat clumps and have clusters of blue flowers mid-spring. Polemonium 'Touch of Class' (Jacob's Ladder) is another one with eye-catching green and white foliage. It blooms later spring with clear blue flowers on stems above the leaves. Helleborus (Lenten Rose) are beautiful with their large flowers in soft pinks and maroons that bloom late winter/early spring and. They bloom for at least a month as the new dark green foliage emerges. You can use it as a deer resistant groundcover as they will slowly spread.
The list doesn't stop at these four. Take a look at some others the next time you visit us. But don't wait too long - getting them in the ground gets them off to a great start!
Aquilegia (Columbine), Bergenia (Heartleaf Bergenia), Epimedium (Barrenwort), Iberis (Candy Tuft), Lamium (Dead Nettle), Phlox divaricata (Woodland Phlox), Phlox stolonifera (Creeping Phlox) Tiarella (Foamflower)...and many more!

Oh, and that reminds me - Don't forget to plan for spring bulbs, too. They will be arriving soon!
Question of the Week

"How late can I fertilize lawns into the fall?"

Mark answers: Turf will keep picking up fertilizer for a period of about two weeks after the top stops growing. Cool season grasses with average weather will continue growing into late November, albeit very slowly. So potentially the grass will keep picking up fertility into mid December as long as there is no snow cover and the ground has not yet frozen.

Given all this I would say you could make applications in early November, and as it gets later in the month start cutting back rates to maybe ¾ or ½ depending on what the weather has been doing.

We have  10-20-15 with 1% iron - a classic fall fertilizer that encourages root growth and winter hardiness. Another excellent fertilizer for the environmentally minded is Plant Health Care's 8-1-9.  This fertilizer has an abundance of microbes promoting healthy plants through the soil ecosystem.

As far as what you should be doing right now I would recommend putting down some 9-2-5 with 6 % iron. This will provide an outstanding deep green fall color (remember plants need iron to make chlorophyll) then six to eight weeks later apply the 8-1-9 or 10-20-15 in mid to late October and into November. This will assure the grass will go into winter healthy and get off to a great, early start next spring!
