Spice up your Fall Plantings with Something Different!

Amsonia hubrechtii
Arkansas Bluestar
It's always nice to be able to offer your customers a little something out of the ordinary. As the summer flowering perennials begin to wane, you'll be looking for fresh fall color. Grasses, Black-eyed Susans, Montauk Daisy and Autumn Joy Sedum are the first that come mind, but if your looking for something different here's a few to help you start thinking in the opposite direction. Most all are fall bloomers or have great fall color.

Agastache x 'Pink Pop' (Hyssop) Hardy to zone 6 but it's worth trying for a long bloom time of pink spikes on silvery-green foliage that is deer resistant. Compact plant is also suited for containers since it grows about 18". Attracts bees and butterflies too!
Amsonia hubrichtii (Arkansas Amsonia, Bluestar, Arkansas Bluestar) Though this is a spring bloomer, it's the fall color that puts on the real show. Long lasting yellow/gold feathery foliage lights up the garden especially when back lit. Light blue flower clusters crown the top of each stem in spring and it's unbeatable plant for three season texture. Plant in full sun. It is just beginning to turn color at the nursery so give it a try, you'll be glad you did!
Anemone (Windflower) 'Prince Henry', 'Robustissima', 'September Charm', 'Whirlwind' - all are great for brightening moist shade. Sweet flowers open from plump round buds. It's an elegant looking plant. Combines well with Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa) and ferns.
Chelone lyonii 'Hot Lips' (Turtlehead) Interesting pink flowers on this variety. Dark foliage on a plant that reaches about 3' and spreads to 2'. Best for moist soils in part shade.
Cimicifuga racemosa (Bugbane) A great plant for part shade. Dark maroon dissected foliage on 'Pink Spike' and 'Brunette. Tall long-blooming spikes of very fragrant flowers can reach about 5 feet. Interesting large dissected leaf with contrasting color for part shade.
Create a fall garden with under-used fall bloomers!
Physostegia virginiana 'Miss Manners' (Obedient Plant) This is a clumping form with long blooming, pure white snapdragon-like flowers and glossy foliage. It grows about 18-24" tall, is deer resistant, attracts hummingbirds and is also a great cut flower.
Tricyrtis hirta (Toad Lily) An unusual plant with a cool bloom for part shade to shade. Upright arching stems have white star-shaped flowers with distinct purple spots. It's almost exotic looking. Plant in a shady garden with most soil.

Nice garden, Claudia!
Question of the Week

"My customers want organic weed prevention. How does Corn Gluten work?"

Answer:

In multi-year field trials conducted by Iowa State University on a lawn infested with crabgrass and was treated twice per year with corn gluten, it was reported that there was a 58% reduction in weeds the first year, 85% the second year, and 91% the third year.

This was with applications in early spring BEFORE weed seed germinates. Remember many broad leaf weeds germinate much earlier than crabgrass around the end of April.  This was followed by a second application in the fall after the hot dry weather is over just before more weed seeds germinate.

Now, because corn gluten is working as a pre emergent it won't work on existing perennial broadleaf weeds so you may need to pull these out or use other herbicides to initially take these weeds out.

In the end, corn gluten can be an effective part of a weed control program with reasonable expectations and an understanding of how it works. So if you did apply in the spring NOW is the time to apply again and keep reducing the number of weeds in your customers lawns while helping to protect the environment with a low environmental impact product such as corn gluten.
