3 ways to Handle the Heat

Terra-Sorb

Super water absorbing gel crystals are used by mixing in with the soil  prior to back filling. It will help hold moisture where the plant needs it - at the roots. Remember to follow directions implicitly, or else!

Tree Watering Bags

These come in very handy for newly planted trees, both 20 gallon zip-up and 15 gallon donuts. When filled, the bags slowly release gallons of water to the rootzone.

Water Star Ultra Grass Seed

The same ratio of fine fescue, rye and bluegrass as our Supreme Blend, but comprised of cultivars that are 30% more drought tolerant once established. It's great for customers that do not have an irrigation system and for those HOT spots where the sun just bakes.

Two Japanese Maples

Once you have one Japanese Maple you may want more! Consider these two less common varieties.
'Murasaki Kiyohima' Japanese Maple
A. palmatum 'Murasaki Kiyohima'

'Murasaki Kiyohime'  is a dwarf specimen Japanese Maple that stays close to the ground growing about 4' tall x 6' wide. Small leaves emerge green in spring with a purple border. Summer color is a medium green. It has good fall color turning orange and yellow. Plant in morning sun or dappled shade to protect it from strong afternoon sun. Provides year-round interest!   limited

'Shishigashira' - Lion's Head Maple
'Shishigashira' Japanese Maple
A. palmatum 'Shishigashira'

The Lion's Head Maple, one of Barbara's favorites, has smooth green bark when young and tightly bunched foliage which turns orange in fall. It has an upright habit slowly reaching  about 10' x 10'. Besides making a beautiful specimen, it's great for the smaller garden, along walkways and patios in full sun or dappled shade. Easy to grow with very little pest or disease issues, it's a great tree for any garden.

Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) is a great native wildflower with a long bloom-time. 'Baby Gold' will only reach about 15" and is a nice addition to the perennial border or meadow.

It is often mistakenly thought to be the culprit of allergy attacks in fall, when it really is the notorius ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) which blooms at the same time (read more here!)

Nice planted with ornamental grasses and other summer/fall bloomers such as Asters, Bee Balm and Sheffield Daisy.

Question of the Week
Healthy Turf
Healthy Turf 8-1-9

"What can I do organically to reduce the incidence of disease on turf and landscape ornamentals?"

Answer:  As high heat and humidity (the dreaded Three-H syndrome) persists, concerns and questions about controlling various fungus problems on turf and landscape ornamentals abound. Managing fertility levels can be a large contributor in reducing the damaging affects of fungus and when trying to do this organically one product stands out: 8-1-9 Healthy Turf. This product provides 9% potassium which helps to thicken the cell walls (cellulose). This very simply makes it much more difficult for fungi to penetrate and cause infection/disease. Also being organic much of the nitrogen is released very slowly and thus not promoting soft growth prone to infection. So if you have plants/turf that has had a history of fungus issues try some 8-1-9 and remember to clean up leaf and other debris, as sanitation goes a long way for disease prevention!
