Mark's Turf Tip:
NEW PRODUCT FOR LAWNS!
19-0-19 with 3% Iron and 62% MESA

ProScape® 19-0-19  with  3% Iron and 62% MESA® slow release technology, is an ideal fertilizer for providing outstanding color and extended feeding over time. This 1:1 ratio of nitrogen and potassium provides higher potassium levels to improve tolerance to turf diseases and other stresses by thickening the plant cell wall which also improves physical durability to traffic. Iron combined with ammonium sulfate provides exceptional dark, green color. MESA® delivers ammonium sulfate and Meth-Ex® 40 in a single, non-burning homogeneous particle. An excellent choice for all turf types where fast, safe green-up and consistent long-term feeding is desired.

Remember, Your landscape work is often judged by the quality and looks of the turf around it. Try some 19-0-19 today!

Drew says:
"Flower Saver Plus. Use it!"
Flower Saver Plus Results!
Flower Saver Plus = Great Results!

We get many requests about how to plant and care for trees and shrubs but somehow when it comes to flowers, both annuals and perennials, many think they'll just take care of themselves.

Last year Drew decided to give Flower Saver Plus a try to see what difference it really makes. He was blown away at the results it gave. Larger plants with impressive flowers, as you can see above!

Flower Saver Plus
Pick up a bag soon!

Flower Save Plus 3-4-3 contains a blend of fertilizer nutrients, mycorrhizal fungi, beneficial bacteria, plus a patented stimulant of VAM fungi. All good stuff to help the plant's absorption of nutrients. Designed to:

  • Reduce heat and drought stress damage
  • Facilitate better survival and growth of new plantings
  • Reduce labor and replacement costs
  • Result in less dead-heading

Directions call for about 1 oz. for a gallon sized plant mixed in the soil at time of planting. Use on Annuals, perennnials, flowering shrubs and ornamental grasses. One 10 lb. bag will cover about 170 sq ft.

Give it a try and see for yourself!

Question of the Week

"Why do we grade trees by caliper and not by height?"

Two trees for size
Two trees, different grading

AnswerWe often get this question, or the question of how tall a particular tree is of a particular caliper.

The fact is, without providing four basic factors, which are caliper, height, spread and branch height, it's very difficult to get the whole story on a tree.

Using a couple of mainstay Connecticut trees will clarify. A 2-2.5" Fall Fiesta Sugar Maple (my favorite cultivar, with Green Mountain coming in a close second) will generally be about 10 feet tall, while a 2-2.5" Flowering Dogwood (popular for very good reason with one of the best floral displays around) will usually measure around eight feet tall.

For these reasons, we feel that caliper is the fairest way to grade most deciduous trees without thoroughly confusing the issue.

Take a look at the two pictures above which will illustrate the point. While both are healthy, viable plants, the 10 foot by 10 foot Kousa (right), at nearly a 4" caliper shows quite differently than the 2-2.5" Kousa on the left.
