Mark's Tip: Screening with Style

Flowering Dogwood with Hemlock
Evergreen screen with
some spring zip!

Here at Planters Choice we are often asked for planting ideas, or "what plants would look good together?" Here is a nice, simple combination that is not often planned on. On the way into work I drive by a group of evergreens that form a screen. Growing out from under are some white Dogwoods (Cornus florida), currently in full flower, looking as though they are part of the screen.

Flowering Dogwood are well suited for this as they have evolved growing under the canopy of larger trees or at the edge of a wood line competing successfully for moisture and nutrients. Dogwoods like the same soil acidity as many Spruce, Hemlock and other evergreens. This would also work well with Limber Pine Pinus flexilis with it's loose open habit.

So here's a tip: the next time a customer asks you to plant a screen of Spruce, Pine or Hemlock, suggest planting some Dogwoods just in front so that in the years to come they'll have a green screen that shows off one of our most beautiful native trees in its natural form, the Flowering Dogwood.

Plants to Know: Aquilegia 'Little Lanterns'

Little Lanterns Columbine

There has always been interest in Columbine, mostly for their awesome spurred flowers and fresh early foliage. Aquilegia canadensis 'Little Lanterns' is a variety of our native Columbine with orange-red and yellow nodding flower on tall stems. It's shorter than the species reaching only about 12" so it's an eye catcher for the front of the border. 'Little Lanterns' is less prone to leaf minor and will take more sun than the hybrids. Keeping it evenly moist through summer helps it to look its best. Its natural habitat is rocky slopes, road sides and along clearings. Hummingbirds and bees are attracted to its nectar, so mass plantings are great for wildlife gardens. Check them out on your next visit!

Question of the Week

Hairy Bittercress
Hairy bittercress

"What is this weed? I have it all over the beds and lawn!"

Answer: Hairy Bitter Cress.

It's an annual weed that develops as basal rosettes and has small white flowers on stems high above the foliage. Long fruiting capsules mature and shoot their seeds up to 3 feet from the plant. The seeds germinate in cool moist soil.

It can be easily controlled by applying early season pre-emergence such as Preen Plus. If you encounter this weed mid- season or after its seed has germinated, hand weeding or spraying with glyphosate products such as Roundup and then applying Preen Plus should give good results when properly done. Always be careful with glyphosate products around desirable plants to avoid damage. Employ good spray techniques such as: low pressure, coarse spray, large nozzle, and keep nozzle close to target weeds to avoid drift. Remember you don't have to spray the whole weed to get results with glyphosate. This weed produces seed throughout the season so after you get the area cleaned up having a long lasting pre-emergent down will prevent this weed from reoccurring.

Always read understand and follow entire product label before use.
