Mark's Turf Tip: Crabgrass Control - It's Not Too Late

In this area crabgrass seed germinates around the middle of the last week of April in areas that get good sun. Typically these areas are along the edges of asphalt curbing, walkways, driveways, patios, Belgian block and the like. These materials absorb a great deal of heat, warming the adjacent soil.

Despite the recent warm spell we had the other week it was not enough to provide the consistent soil temperature, day AND night, of about 55 degrees for 4 to 5 days to allow crabgrass to germinate.

So you still have time apply products like:

  • Team Pro with 22-0-6 fertilizer especially on lawns that did not receive fall fertilizer
  • Barricade with 16-0-8 for lawns that typically have problems with late season crabgrass germination.
  • Dimension with 18-0-5 - This product does not stain and because it works as an early post emergent and pre emergent it can also be used AFTER crabgrass germinates extending your window of application.
  • Confront plus Dimension plus fertilizer - This keeps growing in popularity, giving the added benefit of controlling broadleaf weeds (clover, dandelion etc) and on new spring seedings this product can be applied 2 weeks after  new lawn seed germination.

As always read, follow and understand all product labels before use. Call us with any questions - we're here to help!
Question of the Week

"Do you know where to obtain a good soil mix for a residential putting green?"

Submitted by Sharon at Blossoms Gardens

Answer:

The best soil mix for sodding or seeding is a sandy loam.

If  you're looking to purchase soil for any project, obtain a sample and send it off to the CT Agricultural Station for a soil texture analysis. This eliminates any question as to what you're dealing with. For example, the soil we sell has been tested and is considered a sandy loam. It contains 54.6% sand, 32.0% silt and 13.4% clay. The report given to us from the state reads "...According to USDA criteria, this sample classifies as a SANDY LOAM. Classification is based on particles that are sand size or finer (ie Less than 2 millimeters in diameter)".

Submit your landscaping question via email to sbarbier@planterschoice.com and you'll be entered in a monthly drawing to receive 10% OFF your next purchase (pick up only, does not apply to deliveries). Please use "Question of the Week" in the subject line and let me know if you want your name and business mentioned.

Peonies - They're off to a great start!

The beautiful red new growth is up and growing fast. We have an incredible selection of herbaceous peonies that would fit into any color palette. Single or double flowering in whites, pinks and reds in 2 gallon containers. They are an old fashioned, deer-resistant plant that's full of nostalgia for many of us. Plant in groups for big splashes of color! Look in our catalog for varieties or stop by!

We suggest you keep the heavy flowers up, clean and visible with our peony rings, stakes and Twist'ems!
