Ahhh...Color!
A sure sign of spring is here in time for your color-starved customers! And who isn't after looking at brown turf and bare branches all winter? They are exactly what we all need to get us thinking about this season.  Corrine has given us the 411 on basic pansy care:

-Excellent choice for frost-tolerant color early spring (hardy to Zone 4)
-They'll go dormant with the heat of summer and can bloom again in fall
-Use them in the front of the border where you can later add summer annuals.
-Ditto for the container as they give immediate color holding the space until you're ready for a change as warm weather moves in

The seeds will find their way into rock crevasses and stone paths, (in a good way!) so don't be surprised if you see them next year. Also, not many know...they're edible!

5 reasons to plant Dwarf River Birch
Betula nigra 'Little King'

Need something to generate a few oohs and aahs? Consider Betula nigra 'Little King'. This small gem of a tree will satisfy many situations:

1. Year-round interest as it has the typical River Birch exfoliating bark

 2. Tight space - growing only 10 x 12' (pruning is possible to limit size further)

 3. A native tree (albeit a cultivar...) Introduced originally by Jim King (a.k.a. Fox Valley™)

 4. Tolerant of moist spots and along water courses

 5. Unusual idea for an interesting hedge as it is both low and densly branched

Plant it as you would any River Birch - moist soil in full sun/part shade.

Be sure to take a look the next time you're here!
