Cover Up!
Covering the lower houses in Newtown. Thursday's wind made it interesting!

Although you'll see many of our hoop houses covered, or in the process of being covered, all plant material is still accessible for your late fall jobs. The weather has been favorable and the precipitation a nice plus. Good hydration is crucial to new plantings and established plants going into the winter months.
Deer repellents - Apply BEFORE They Do Damage!

Bobbex and Deer Out
As we all know deer browsing is a "perennial" problem in the landscape. One of the worst mistakes that can be made is to wait to start spraying till after you see the damage. In this case the deer already know there is good food available and they will try to eat after you have sprayed. But if you are proactive and start spraying before they start feeding on your landscape they learn there is nothing good and tend to move on.

Spotrete + ClearSpray = No Deer

Repellents such as  Bobbex, Deer Out, and Spotrete (Thiram) are best applied at 40º F and above. The first two are great for smaller properties when the larger spray equipment is not needed. They also come in Ready-To-Use spray bottles which are handy for your crews and to leave with the homeowners.

Spotrete is used as a control of select foliar diseases and as an animal repellent. Thiram is the active ingredient that repells deer by taste. It needs to be combined with a sticker (ClearSpray) for it to be effective throughout the winter without washing off.  Spotrete is especially good for larger properties being very effective and lasting through the winter season. However it does leave a white residue on the foliage that tends to fade as the new growth emerges in spring.
Remember, no matter what product you choose, apply before they start feeding!
It's the Law!  You Must Be Licensed to Apply Pesticides!

DEEP LogoIn the last few days we've had 3 more people sign up for the class to prepare for state testing for the 3a Supervisory License for pesticide applications.

Remember, if you are getting paid to make a pesticide application, you need this license. All pesticides have an EPA Registration Number. Many people think this only applies to liquid sprays.  In fact, all granular products with and without fertilizer, such as crabgrass control, grub control like Dylox and Merit, are all pesticides with an EPA number. By taking this class you will protect yourself and the environment by learning how to properly handle and apply these materials safely.

Sign up for the 6 - 1.5 hour sessions geared specifically to the information you need to help you test for this important license. Registration fee payable at time of signup in order to hold your spot. This class limited to 25 people and is beginning to fill up!
