AMARYLLIS  PRE-ORDERS

The year-end holidays are fast approaching - consider giving your new and long-time customers a pre-potted, boxed Amaryllis bulb to enjoy. Once watered it will bloom in about 6 weeks. Nice size bulb, 26-28cm. Minimum order is 6. Call with questions and pricing.

WANTED: WOOD CHIPS

If you are looking for a place to dump your chips, look no further! We will accept them at both locations, Newtown and Watertown.

Call ahead 203-426-4037.

WATERING

Keep in mind that with last week's mild temperatures and little to no rainfall in our area, it is very important to keep your newly planted material well watered. It doesn't take long for soil to dry out even with the unusual snowfall we had less than 2 weeks ago.

Burning Bush Rivals!
Rhododendron 'Aglo'

If you are looking for fall color and want to try using something other than Burning Bush, come on over and take a look at these two beauties which are sure to turn some heads - the small-leaf Rhododendron 'Aglo' and Spiraea japonica 'Froebelii'.

Most PJM Rhododendron turn a deep, dark red which adds contrast to the landscape this time of year, but 'Aglo' can rival many plants grown expressly for fall interest. The leaves turn to a beautiful mix of mohogany and bright red. Besides its change in leaf color when cooler weather hits, the buds you see above will form beautiful wavy pink flowers with a deeper pink throat in time for next spring's show.  It's a perfect size for a foundation growing 4-5' tall or for a shrub or mixed border. They come in handy also when a small evergreen screen is needed. Plant in full sun to partial shade. Barbara has grown hers for years and loves it!

Spiraea japonica 'Froebelii'

Spiraea japonica 'Froebelii' is a Spiraea not many are familiar with. It has the typical pink fuzzy flowers June-July, is a nice compact size (3-4' x 4-5' wide), is hardy to Zone 4 and quite heat tolerant for a japonica. But this time of year it's the toothed leaves that turn a carmine red-orange that grab our attention. Use in an island with grasses and juniper or along a foundation. They can also be massed on a hill - great for erosion control. Plant them in full sun for a double whammy of summer and fall color!

Perennial of the Week: Carex morrowii 'Ice Dance'
Carex 'Ice Dance'

common name: Sedge Grass

size: 12-18" spreading
interest: Variegated foliage
culture: Moist soil, part shade

time of year: year round interest
companion plants: Hosta, Turtlehead, Astilbe

'Ice Dance' is a clump forming grass that will spread by rhizomes. It's nice for woodland gardens, fall containers, perking up areas along the foundation and especially useful as a  groundcover making it a nice alternative to Pachysandra. The leathery leaves are edged in a creamy yellow with dark green centers. It does have a flower, but it's insignificant.  It is an easy-to-grow perennials that's low-maintenance - just divide if needed in spring. Old foliage can be cut back late winter to keep them extra neat.

Next Friday will be our last Perennial of the Week for the year. If you'd like to know more about any perennial we grow, or have a particular one you find yourself using again and again - drop us an email. We'd like to mention it in an upcoming Pick!
